More support for Tassie
One of North Melbourne’s greatest players has thrown his weight behind the club’s push into Hobart.
Shinboner of the Century Glenn Archer says the newly struck deal to play two games each year at Blundstone Arena this year and beyond is a clever move - based on his own personal experiences.
"I've been going to Tassie for the last 20 years on a regular basis because my Dad lives down there. For those who have been down there, they are the maddest footy state in the country, even more so than Victoria," Archer told the CrocMedia team on radio.
Archer believes that North Melbourne will reach an untapped area on the Apple Isle.
"Obviously they've had Launceston with Hawthorn, but there's more of a population base in Hobart so I was rapt when they (North) decided to play games there. Hopefully it's going to be a long tenure down there."
With strong opinions on how the club should go about creating a foothold in Hobart, Archer suggests a lot of effort should be put into the younger generation of local supporters.
"We have to grow our supporter base and there isn't a better place in the country to try and grow it. The community involvement has to be really strong, making sure that they're getting down there and getting around to the schools with every young kid walking out with a North Melbourne hat."
"Hopefully in 10 or 15 years time we've got 10 or 15,000 members down there."
When quizzed over whether he has an official role with North Melbourne regarding Hobart and Blundstone Arena, Archer met the potential idea with open arms.
"I've got nothing official, but I've said to the club, if you want me to do anything then I'll do it. Like I've said a lot of times, I owe the club a lot for what they've done for me in 16 years of footy there. So whatever they want me to do, that is cool and I'll do it for them."
