It’s remarkable to think North’s last defeat over Collingwood was way back in 2008; the year of the club’s most recent finals appearance, when names like Simpson, Grant, Harris, Jones and Rawlings were still kicking around.

The team back in Round 16 year contained just eight players that will take the field on Saturday night.

Ninth on the table and coming up against the fifth-placed Magpies, the Kangaroos went in as underdogs but under lights at Etihad Stadium, they weren’t to be denied in front of their home fans.

Drew Petrie’s performance was colossal as he pulled in 11 marks and booted two goals, while Brent Harvey was at his brilliant best with 27 disposals and a goal.
Collingwood had the ascendency and lead at both the first change and main break, but it was the third quarter when North flexed its muscle. Matt Campbell’s speed a highlight as he went on a devastating run down the wing and delivered the ball inside 50. Todd Goldstein kicked true and it was the Kangaroos by two goals.

Jack Anthony and the Magpies weren’t done and he snapped a clever goal early in the last which could have set up a fantastic finish. But it wasn’t to be with goals to David Hale and Daniel Pratt, before another flashing run from Campbell and subsequent goal from Grant saw North celebrate on the Friday night stage again.

It was the second in a six-game winning streak for Dean Laidley’s team, though North was knocked out in the first round of the finals.
