kangaroos.com.au has delivered a detailed breakdown of the club’s Dream Team prospects and now Brad Scott has offered his advice.

North’s senior coach says coaches should look to the Kangaroos’ ruck stocks for real value in 2012.

“Probably the player who gave best value for us is Drew Petrie on the back of injury the year before. If you look at that form then Hamish McIntosh is one that I think will be super value.”

“He’s been terrific on the track, I rate him as an upper-echelon ruckman and we’re fortunate there to have Todd Goldstein in that category as well. Hamish is a big part of our plans so if you want value, I don’t think you can look past Hamish.”

Scott also hinted at more game-time for some up and coming stars.

“The two that played a little bit of footy last year but we expect to play a lot more will be Kieran Harper and Shaun Atley. Both are a lot stronger but that second year in the system; they really know what AFL footy is all about now so we think they’ll play a lot more footy and get a lot more of the ball when they do play.”

DUAL POSITION

Leigh Adams

Position: Forward/Midfield
Price: $416,400

2011 Average: 84.19 from 21 games
2010 Average: 81.53 from 15 games
Career Average: 79.7 from 44 games

Verdict: While on first glance the price for Adams may seem steep, it's worth reflecting on his finish to 2011. Seven out of his final eight games reaped scores of 80+, and Adams always provides solid output in the Tackles and Marks categories. If he spends more time in the midfield in 2012 he could be a sneaky chance at a premium position.

Tom Curran
Position: Forward/Defence
Price: $98,700

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: Despite the promising key position forward having a bright future, he is currently behind the likes of Drew Petrie and co. for a spot in the forward line. However, keep an eye on him, because when he does break through for his debut he will be a handy cash cow for either your forwards or backs.

Lachlan Hansen
Position: Defence/Forward
Price: $270,900

2011 Average: 54.76 from 17 games
2010 Average: 69.29 from 21 games
Career Average: 59.5 from 66 games

Verdict: Hansen is a case of a player that can be a key component in a win for North Melbourne, but whose stats don't necessarily translate well to Dream Team. For example, his performance against Collingwood in Round 16 - where he shut down Travis Cloke - scored only 59 Dream Team points.

Brent Harvey
Position: Forward/Midfield
Price: $435,700

2011 Average: 88.09 from 22 games
2010 Average: 94.73 from 22 games
Career Average: 81 from 284 games

Verdict: The long time Dream Team lock showed nothing in 2011 to change that opinion. The added flexibility of dual positions plus the rarity of a poor Dream Team game (only one score below 50 in 2011) makes Boomer one of the first players selected in the majority of teams.

FORWARDS

Aaron Black
Position: Forward
Price: $150,400

2011 Average: 38 from 1 game
2010 Average: N/A
Career Average: 38 from 1 game

Verdict: Black was impressive in his debut in Round 24 last season, showing glimpses of the talent that convinced North Melbourne to draft him in the second round of the 2009 Draft.

At essentially a rookie price, if Black continues in the same way he finished 2011, he can be a valuable cash cow as well as a unique pick when filling out your team.

Matt Campbell
Position: Forward
Price: $243,000

2011 Average: 49.13 from 8 games
2010 Average: 51.5 from 12 games
Career Average: 50.5 from 66 games

Verdict: As he showed against Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium last year, Campbell can single handedly turn a game on its head in rapid time. However, his inability to play a full season leaves him as a high-risk selection.

Aaron Edwards
Position: Forward
Price: $323,900

2011 Average: 65.47 from 19 games
2010 Average: 69.79 from 14 games
Career Average: 61.4 from 69 games

Verdict: The fourth-oldest player on the North Melbourne list, Edwards will take on a senior role this season. That should mean fewer low Dream Team scores with increased responsibility, but it's his capability to break through triple figures that will determine whether he's picked in your team or not.

Kieran Harper
Position: Forward
Price: $248,400

2011 Average: 50.21 from 14 games
2010 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: Harper's improved appearance at training during January has tongues wagging amongst the club supporter base; his increased bulk leading to excitement over the potential for his 2012 season. His talent was evident in flashes in his debut season and if that is consolidated, Harper could be a surprise packet.

Ayden Kennedy
Position: Forward
Price: $104,200

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: Before his season-ending knee injury in the 2011 pre-season, Kennedy was gathering steam for a push towards senior selection. If he can recapture that form, he might be a smoky for your bench.

Malcolm Lynch
Position: Forward
Price: $85,800

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: The former VFL Port Melbourne premiership player and 2011 Rookie Draft selection, Lynch has a skill set that has proven to translate well from the lower level to the AFL. With high hopes for the speedy forward, a solid pre-season may have Lynch in the mix for selection in Round 1.

Ben McKinley
Position: Forward
Price: $141,000

2011 Average: 28.5 from 2 games
2010 Average: 63.6 from 10 games (West Coast)
Career Average: 57 from 48 games

Verdict: Playing as a marking forward, McKinley has shown an ability to impose himself on a game. The problem is, that stay-at-home forwards might win games in real-life; but it's not the best in the Dream Team world.

Drew Petrie
Position: Forward
Price: $432,700

2011 Average: 87.48 from 21 games
2010 Average: 50.5 from 2 games
Career Average: 70.4 from 193 games

Verdict: Petrie was one of the most selected players in the competition in 2011, his low price due to an injury-plagued 2010 making him a no-brainer for your forward line. Now with his price in the upper echelon, the dilemma for your team is this: Will he continue his 2011 form?

If your answer is yes, then he should be in your team. If not, look to others.

Lindsay Thomas
Position: Forward
Price: $291,800

2011 Average: 59 from 19 games
2010 Average: 60.17 from 18 games
Career Average: 57.8 from 90 games

Verdict: Thomas' average doesn't scream ‘buy me now’ for a price tag of almost $300,000 but look past those numbers and instead focus on Round 24 of 2011 against Richmond.

In that match, Thomas played further up the field from his customary forward pocket and thrived, picking up 20 possessions, 5 marks and 8 tackles for a total of 112 points. If Thomas is kept in that position for 2012, he may more than justify his price tag.

Ben Warren
Position: Forward
Price: $146,700

2011 Average: 29.67 from 3 games
2010 Average: 62.94 from 16 games
Career Average: 56.1 from 28 games

Verdict: If Warren turns in a Dream Team season similar to his 2010 output, he can be an effective money-maker due to his low starting price of $146,700. He is a case where it's best to have your eyes peeled for the Round 1 squads after watching the pre-season, before making a decision on whether to pick him up.

Sam Wright
Position: Forward
Price: $272,700

2011 Average: 55.13 from 8 games
2010 Average: 59.9 from 20 games
Career Average: 56.8 from 32 games

Verdict: After a shoulder injury prematurely brought Sam Wright's 2011 season to a conclusion, the early stages of 2012 should be about focusing on establishing a spot in the senior side. That may mean a price drop for a few weeks and it's at this point where there should be serious consideration to picking him up for your team.

RUCKS

Majak Daw
Position: Ruck
Price: $104,200

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: His exploits in the VFL during 2011 saw Majak Daw take out kangaroos.com.au’s Play of the Year and he is drawing ever closer to a senior debut.

If he does manage to earn a senior spot in 2012, expect him to be one of the most selected players competition-wide.

He hasn’t been a high possession winner at the Werribee Tigers, but his rapid improvement suggests that aspect of his game could quickly increase.

Todd Goldstein
Position: Ruck
Price: $491,600

2011 Average: 99.38 from 21 games
2010 Average: 74.86 from 21 games
Career Average: 76.1 from 58 games

Verdict: Last season Goldstein arrived on the AFL scene; the absence of Hamish McIntosh meant he had to shoulder the ruck load single-handedly. The spectacular results mean he’s now regarded as a premium ruckman, and with good reason.

McIntosh’s return could potentially see a decrease in Goldstein’s scores with less time in the middle but on the other hand, it may make him an even bigger danger as an agile resting forward.

There aren't many better options for a starting ruckman this season than the newly re-signed Goldstein.

Ben Mabon
Position: Ruck
Price: $104,200

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: With 2012 looming as another development year for the promising Mabon, he may struggle to get game-time behind both Goldstein and McIntosh.

Mabon will be hoping to get some regular minutes under his belt in the VFL having had an injury-interrupted run last year.

With great agility for a big a big man, he continues to flourish and could be an option in future years.

Hamish McIntosh
Position: Ruck
Price: $273,500

2011 Average: 79 from 1 game
2010 Average: 80.5 from 20 games
Career Average: 74.8 from 98 games

Verdict: McIntosh has been the North Melbourne player most Dream Team enthusiasts have looked towards for a price tag after his 2011 season yielded just a single game.

His $273,500 salary is low enough that depending on your strategy, he can be drafted straight into your team with plenty of upside.

McIntosh should be given every chance to re-establish himself in the senior side and at the very least, presuming he is selected by coach Brad Scott, he should increase in price enough for an upgrade to a premium mid-season.

MIDFIELD

Liam Anthony
Position: Midfield
Price: $378,200

2011 Average: 76.46 from 13 games
2010 Average: 95.14 from 7 games
Career Average: 87.4 from 30 games

Verdict: After a strong start to his Dream Team career, Anthony's average tailed off slightly last season. However the number four hasn't lost the ability to rack up big scores - four times in 2011 he registered more than 90 points.

Having spent time with the defensive unit in the pre-season, a potential new role for Anthony could open up his scoring potential.

Shaun Atley

Position: Midfield
Price: $239,300

2011 Average: 48.38 from 16 games
2010 Average: N/A
Career Average: 48.38 from 16 games

Verdict: In his debut season, Atley showed promise in multiple statistical categories; his handballing and tackling a feature.

He's already been earmarked by assistant coach Shane Watson as one of the most impressive on the track during the pre-season and at a relatively low price, there is plenty of room for improvement.

Ryan Bastinac

Position: Midfield
Price: $324,400

2011 Average: 65.58 from 12 games
2010 Average: 65.5 from 22 games
Career Average: 65.5 from 34 games

Verdict: As shown by his career average, the remarkably consistent Bastinac has been a reliable option for many Dream-Teamers over his first two seasons. Following an injury-free pre-season, it could be time for Bastinac to take the step up from just another mid-price player to a premium midfielder. He has the talent and support around him to be able to do so.

Ben Cunnington
Position: Midfield
Price: $260,000

2011 Average: 52.56 from 16 games
2010 Average: 54.78 from 18 games
Career Average: 53.5 from 34 games

Verdict: It was a tough year for Cunnington in 2011 as he was moved around in different positions and for the most part unable to really hold down a spot.

However, Cunnington exploded past the century in the final match of the year against Richmond, despite a tendency to handball more than kick.

Flying on the track in the pre-season, the youngster needs to find his place in the team to help his average rocket towards the triple-figure mark.

Cruize Garlett
Position: Midfield
Price: $267,700

2011 Average: 54.11 from 9 games
2010 Average: 62.64 from 11 games
Career Average: 58.2 from 25 games

Verdict: In an up-and-down 2011 for Garlett, he showed that when his tackling was on song, he could post a respectable score despite minimal game time.

Used regularly as the sub last season, his hard work on the track should allow him to spend more time on the ground.

He's a proven accumulator when it comes to possessions, so could be a bargain find if given more opportunities.

Sam Gibson
Position: Midfield
Price: $85,800

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: Gibson has impressed from the moment he arrived at Aegis Park. A victory in the two-kilometre time trial on the first day back signaled his intent to work his way into the senior side.

His prior experience as captain of Box Hill will have Gibson well prepared for the rigors of senior football. The absence of Ziebell and potentially Wells in round one against Essendon could be all that Gibson needs to prove himself, but he'll be competing with other rookies for a senior spot which makes things a little tougher.

Levi Greenwood
Position: Midfield
Price: $287,700

2011 Average: 58.15 from 13 games
2010 Average: 71 from 17 games
Career Average: 61.3 from 41 games

Verdict: Greenwood's average dipped in 2011 off the back of an injury interrupted first half of the season.

He also had more of a propensity to handball with his kick to handball ratio heading towards level pegging.

Given his efforts in 2010 and with a full pre-season under his belt, Greenwood could be a wait-and-see, but does loom as a potential bargain as one of North's first-picked every week.

Jamie MacMillan
Position: Midfield
Price: $213,200

2011 Average: 43.11 from 9 games
2010 Average: 49.25 from 4 games
Career Average: 45 from 13 games

Verdict: Macmillan was beginning to cement himself in the North Melbourne side in 2011 before a horrific facial injury suffered against Adelaide. His kick to handball ratio had increased, which is good news heading into 2012.

Macmillan's price is still low enough for coaches to take a low-risk flyer on him and with Brent Harvey singling Macmillan out for praise, there's plenty to like about North's number 34.

Brad McKenzie
Position: Midfield
Price: $103,200

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: The 18th pick in the 2011 National Draft is a player that Dream Team coaches will have their eyes on, with his ability to fill a spot in the team running off half-back.

He'll need to earn his spot throughout the NAB Cup, but his sublime skills by foot mean his team-mates will be looking to get the ball in his hands at every opportunity.

While his slight build means McKenzie will struggle to play all 22 games, he looks a good chance to accumulate enough matches to make his inclusion into your squad worth while.

Aaron Mullett
Position: Midfield
Price: $219,300

2011 Average: 44.33 from 3 games
2010 Average: N/A
Career Average: 44.33 from 3 games

Verdict: Mullett impressed on his introduction to the senior team late in 2011. However, his third game in round 24 leaves his price at an awkward starting point for coaches in 2012.

Despite his undoubted talent, he is a high-risk pick-up at almost $220k due to the unknown factor having very little senior football under his belt.

Another who's skills by foot mean he'll get plenty of the ball if given the chance, but he first needs to overcome the hurdle of being promoted to the senior list for a second time.

Cameron Richardson

Position: Midfield
Price: $211,500

2011 Average: 42.75 from 8 games
2010 Average: N/A
Career Average: 42.75 from 8 games

Verdict: Beginning 2011 as a potential cash cow from North Melbourne, Richardson struggled to live up to expectations.

Some strong performances at North Ballarat as the year drew to a close were a good sign for owners considering picking him up again.

He has had an injury interrupted pre-season so may be a player to assess on VFL form a little later.

Ben Speight
Position: Midfield
Price: $236,800

2011 Average: 47.88 from 8 games
2010 Average: N/A
Career Average: 47.88 from 8 games

Verdict: Speight showed glimpses of his talent last season playing as a substitute, collecting 53 points against the Bulldogs in Round 17 in just a quarter.

Having recovered from a shoulder injury that prematurely ended his 2011, Speight will be hoping to step things up and secure a regular spot in the first 18 to produce something similar to his effort against Adelaide when he had 23 possessions and four marks (72 points).

Andrew Swallow
Position: Midfield
Price: $491,500

2011 Average: 99.36 from 22 games
2010 Average: 98.5 from 22 games
Career Average: 84.1 from 103 games

Verdict: Swallow was another North Melbourne player that made the leap in 2011. His tackling adds another dimension to comparable premium midfielders and gives him scope to collect a respectable score even on his quieter days possession-wise.

From rounds 17-23 last season, Swallow broke the ton five times and was upwards of 115 on three occasions. He should be in your calculations when debating first picked midfielders.

Max Warren

Position: Midfield
Price: $103,800

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: The highly rated rookie should get every chance to impress at VFL level early in the season, but is competing against others looking for a senior promotion. Monitor.

Daniel Wells

Position: Midfield
Price: $462,400

2011 Average: 93.48 from 21 games
2010 Average: 82.37 from 19 games
Career Average: 74.9 from 165 games

Verdict: After a 2011 season in which Wells took the step into the elite category of midfielders, his off-season setback may have pushed him back a couple of rungs in the eyes of Dream Team coaches.

However, Wells is progressing nicely in his recovery and is hoping not to miss too many games at the start of the season.

A fantastic athlete and still in full non-contact training at the moment, it shouldn't take Wells long to adapt to the pace of the game again. That leaves the only question as whether he can replicate his 2011 form.

Jack Ziebell

Position: Midfield
Price: $384,900

2011 Average: 77.81 from 21 games
2010 Average: 66.64 from 14 games
Career Average: 71.4 from 45 games

Verdict: Excluding round 22 against Fremantle where he was taken off early with an injury concern, Ziebell finished 2011 in incredible form. From round 14 through to round 23, Ziebell dipped under 90 only once while breaking the century mark four times. The stand-out was an incredible 156 point performance against the Bulldogs in Round 17.

His suspension rules him out of the first two rounds of 2012 and for that reason, it wouldn't be wise to include him in your starting team. However, if you haven't drafted well and have a struggling premium the week Ziebell makes his return; his inclusion could prove a master-stroke given his rapid improvement.

DEFENCE

Cameron Delaney
Position: Defence
Price: $104,200

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: While he is yet to make his debut, the coaching staff have been impressed by the versatile Delaney’s efforts at North Ballarat. Heading into his second year at the club and with a strong pre-season under his belt, some good form in the VFL may present an opportunity later in the year.

Luke Delaney
Position: Defence
Price: $199,100

2011 Average: 40.25 from 8 games
2010 Average: N/A
Career Average: 40.25 from 8 games

Verdict: Delaney impressed in his debut last year, keeping Jonathan Brown in check in difficult conditions. While he showed he does have the ability to contain the gorilla forwards of the AFL, at the moment, he doesn't amass enough possessions to be a permanent fixture in your line-up.

Michael Firrito
Position: Defence
Price: $297,000

2011 Average: 60.05 from 21 games
2010 Average: 68.14 from 22 games
Career Average: 57.5 from 165 games

Verdict: Now the veteran of the defensive unit, Firrito will hope for another consistent season. The 28 year-old rarely turns in a poor performance which means if you're looking for a mid-price pickup, he’s a safe selection.

Nathan Grima
Position: Defence
Price: $279,900

2011 Average: 56.58 from 12 games
2010 Average: 70 from 17 games
Career Average: 65.1 from 42 games

Verdict: An efficient user of the ball, Grima is a player whose value in the Dream Team world doesn't accurately reflect his standing at the club. However, he has had periods of high scoring - three straight matches at the tail end of 2010 yielding between 96 and 103 points shows he’s capable of racking up good numbers. Has been flying in pre-season training.

Brad Mangan
Position: Defence
Price: $85,800

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: The rookie Mangan arrives at the club with a high pedigree having kept Brendan Fevola goalless in the VFL last season. Being able to play both back and forward makes him a versatile back-up.

Scott McMahon
Position: Defence
Price: $335,400

2011 Average: 67.81 from 21 games
2010 Average: 62.82 from 17 games
Career Average: 64.3 from 85 games

Verdict: While 2011 was McMahon's most consistent season yet, his statistics don't translate to Dream Team.

His average fell in the awkward 60-70 point range without a huge gain on past results.

However his finish to 2011 was terrific (averaged 93 in last four games) and if he can replicate that, he looks like a bargain selection.

Cameron Pedersen
Position: Defence
Price: $353,000

2011 Average: 71.36 from 14 games
2010 Average: N/A
Career Average: 71.36 from 14 games

Verdict: Pedersen was a popular pick among Dream Team coaches last season as one of the most profitable cash cows in the competition. With his price now more settled among the pack, he’s become North’s most expensive defender. It was in attack that he excelled points-wise in 2011, so keep an eye on where he lines up in the NAB Cup.

Will Sierakowski
Position: Defence
Price: $104,200

2011 Average: N/A
Career Average: N/A

Verdict: The former Hawk has impressed in pre-season on the track and his deadly left foot may well see him demanding selection early on. Sierakowski looks the part as a handy ball-winner off half-back if given the chance, but faces plenty of competition from similar types at Aegis Park.

Robbie Tarrant
Position: Defence
Price: $233,200

2011 Average: 47.14 from 7 games
2010 Average: 29.5 from 2 games
Career Average: 43.2 from 9 games

Verdict: After multiple injury plagued seasons, Tarrant was finally able to break the shackles in 2011 and play seven senior games.

Generally not a huge accumulator, Tarrant’s likely role in a key position could make him a risk early, but the number 25 is impressing on the track and could be in for his best season yet.

Scott D. Thompson
Position: Defence
Price: $335,500

2011 Average: 67.82 from 22 games
2010 Average: 73 from 22 games
Career Average: 63.2 from 72 games

Verdict: Coming into the 2012 season having played 66 consecutive games, Thompson is certainly a durable option. However at his price, he needs to increase his average to be a valuable selection. If Grima can re-emerge as a genuine key-position option, it may release Thompson to move up the field and find more of the ball.

Gavin Urquhart
Position: Defence
Price: $145,800

2011 Average: 7 from 1 game
2010 Average: 59.13 from 8 games
Career Average: 60.3 from 40 games

Verdict: With a second chance on the North Melbourne list, Urquhart is desperate to turn his career around. In his most successful Dream Team year (2009), Urquhart showed that he was capable of breaking the ton regularly, but with six rookies alongside him vying for a promotion things get tougher now.

*Career Average refers to regular season games, and does not include finals.
