Collingwood ruckman Darren Jolly has declared himself fit for the season opener against North Melbourne.

The ruckman says there are no concerns with his back, despite being hospitalised after copping a hit during a practice match against Geelong.

"I'm very confident (of playing in round one)," he told collingwoodfc.com.au.

"I've dealt with injuries in the past and this is no different. I'll make sure I look after it this week and be ready to go for next week."

In the last meeting between the two sides, Todd Goldstein had the better of the match-up with Jolly, with a 40-24 hit-out edge earning him one Brownlow vote.

While doubt has surrounded the availability of key-defender Ben Reid, Jolly has backed his team-mate.

"I think maybe Reidy might be ready to go but I'm dubious about Daisy (Thomas)," he added.

"He's (Thomas) confident he'll be ready for round one and he's back training but I think he has to prove to the coaches that he can really get up and go and be tackled."

Thomas had 27 possessions in Round 21 last year against the Kangaroos, while Reid's ability can't be underestimated despite a quiet performance on the same night.
