The VFL review
Majak Daw had 21 disposals and 31 hit-outs for Werribee on Sunday.
Development coaches John Lamont and Josh Drummond shared their thoughts on the North players involved.
Werribee (Lamont)
Majak Daw
“I was pleased with Majak’s game. When you get omitted from the AFL team it’s never designed as being a test but it ends up being one and Majak certainly passed. He had 21 disposals and took a few good marks.
“He only managed a couple of behinds but spent more time in the ruck in a really good contest against Ben Mabon. He stayed in the game all day and it was a positive effort from Majak - very pleasing for him.”
Levi Greenwood
“Levi’s (18 disposals) obviously pretty close to senior selection. He keeps the pressure on the North midfield group that they need to keep doing the job.
“He was opposed to Myles Sewell from North Ballarat in the first half, then Scott West (Werribee coach) moved him onto Liam Anthony after half time and Levi quelled his influence.
“In the AFL we haven’t really had anyone locking on and running with the opposition blokes but if Brad (Scott) wants to go that way, Levi’s doing a pretty good job at it and he’ll be ready to go.”
Ayden Kennedy
“Ayden was better than the previous couple of weeks. He kicked a good goal late in the game at a key time and defended better so it was a much more positive effort from Ayden.”
Tim McGenniss
“Tim (18 disposals) played through the midfield on Liam Anthony early, but didn’t play tight enough on him. Liam had about 24 possessions in the first half so Scott West made the decision he had to move Tim off him after that.
“He still did some good things and it was a good learning game for him, he also kicked a couple of goals.”
Ben Speight
“Ben played Foxtel Cup on Tuesday night and yesterday was a bit of a comeback VFL match for him. He had a dozen possessions but we still need more from Speighty.”
Mason Wood
“Mason started well, had some great touches early in the game but hurt his calf in the second quarter. That reduced his influence and then he took no further part after half time.
“He kicked the first goal of the game and was pretty lively early on so it was unfortunate to lose him in the game.”
North Ballarat (Drummond)
Liam Anthony
“He was terrific. In the first half he was easily the best man on the ground - he had 24 touches.
“He got a fair bit of the ball outside as he was being rewarded for his effort to break and spread hard. He was getting involved multiple times in the one passage but he was still winning his own ball.
“In the second half Levi (Greenwood) went to Liam which quietened him down a little bit but he was still working hard.”
Cam Delaney
“Cam had a great matchup with Scott Clouston who is one of Werribee’s key forwards. Cam started a bit shaky but through the middle part of the game he was really good.
“He marked the ball really well and you don’t see the one-on-one matchup the two had too often these days. Both Cam and Clouston were good for their respective teams.
“It was Cam’s first full game for a few weeks so he’ll be much better for the run.”
Luke Delaney
“Keys’ really limited Ben Brown from Werribee who’s been in good form for them. He was absolutely terrific and was barely beaten in the one-on-one contests as has been the case in the last few weeks.”
Taylor Garner
“Taylor started the game really well. He really had an impact on the game – not so much after that but given his preparation, another week or two under his belt we’ll start to see some real improvement from him.
“With the way he plays, he throws himself at the contest and he doesn’t die wondering which is a terrific attribute. It was his first full game so his minutes increased. Even though he was tired he was still moving pretty well.
Ben Jacobs
“Ben was pretty good early, playing inside. His work in and around the stoppages was good but he was relatively quiet after half-time.”
Ben Mabon
“He went toe to toe with Werribee’s two ruckmen. It was an improved effort on last week. He broke even in the ruck, had really good intensity around the contest and got used a few times on the way out as well.”
Brad McKenzie
“He was playing on a wing for the majority of the game. He didn’t have a huge impact on the game with his disposal but he was working really hard.
“His work rate has been pretty good. Where his improvement can come from is the defensive side of the game and his reaction without the ball.
“For him it’s just concentration and making sure he’s on his toes ready to defend, not reacting too late and having to put the big strides in to catch his man.”
Cam Richardson
“He played forward all day and also pushed back really hard defensively to help out.
“He’s been playing almost as a key forward which is not necessarily his natural role but he’s been pretty good in it for the last few weeks.”
Max Warren
“The good thing about Max this year is his consistency. He’s been good in the contest; he’s given run out of defence and drive.
“It’s a credit to him and the way he’s gone about his training that he’s set himself up to play well. He’s played his role for us just about every week so far this season.”
Mitch Wilkins
“Mitch had his best game of the year last week but didn’t quite back it up this week. We’ll be looking to him to bounce back next game.”
Eric Wallace (reserves)
“His tackling was good once again and it’s been great in all of his games. It’s a bit surprising considering he came from a non-contact sport.
“He’s a very smart individual and he’s picking up the little idiosyncrasies of the game quite quickly. He picks up something new each week with his positioning and he’s making gradual improvements with every game.”
