Most expected it to be a tough year for the Saints, but they defied the odds in the early part of the season.

Winning its first two games, and three from the first five, St Kilda sat just outside the eight.

Unfortunately for new coach Alan Richardson, that’s where the run stopped; 10 losses in succession has left his team a game clear at the bottom of the ladder.

An 85-point loss to Carlton on Sunday was a low point.

Nick Riewoldt’s best efforts could do little to help his team.

The stats provide a damning indication of where the Saints are at.

There’s room for optimism though. With a young developing group, Richardson has fielded 40 players this season.

Luke Dunstan, Jack Billings and Jack Newnes have been among those to impress, with some suggesting a move further up the field for Riewoldt could help them progress even further.

With the heat well and truly on from the coach, the Saints will have plenty to prove on Saturday.
