Shaun Higgins believes places in North Melbourne’s round one team are still well and truly up for grabs.

Speaking on SEN’s Morning Glory on Monday, the former Bulldog pointed to the Roos’ depth.

“All strong clubs and clubs hoping to do well need that competition... especially if they want to go well,” Higgins said.

“With the new personnel along with the way a few of the young guys have carried themselves during the pre-season and (NAB Challenge) games, it’s going to be tough for selections in Round 1.”

Despite his strong pre-season form, even Higgins has no guarantees.

“I fall in the same category as every else… having said that I’d love to be there in Round 1.”

The midfielder hinted North will field a strong lineup against Richmond on Saturday.

“It’s hard the first couple of weeks to take any form out of it (pre-season games)... this week will be a good indication,” Higgins said.

“We’ve been one (side) that we’ve built up almost every quarter that we’ve played.”

Higgins missed the win against Hawthorn, and will be refreshed after an additional week’s break.

Known for his pace and ability to read the play, he should be suited to an already notable change of approach across the league.

“I think going into games there’s more of an emphasis on ball movement and scoring,” he said.

“It was evident (last couple weeks) that’s what they’re leaning towards.

“Teams moving the ball as quickly as they can, get it into the forward line as quickly as they can, and defend from there.”
