Former North ruckman Matthew ‘Spider’ Burton is confident Daniel Wells can overcome the persistent right foot injury that restricted him to just 10 games last year.
Burton, who played 77 games for the Roos between 2000 and 2003, believes the midfielder will be able to unleash his full potential again this season.
“Given the amount of games he didn’t get to play last year, I think ‘Wellsy’ can be the one who improves on last year,” Burton told NMFC.com.au in a past player survey.
“When most people think of most improved, they think of a young player, but compared to 2014, I think Wellsy’s the one fully fit that can go.”
Renowned for his towering 210cm frame during his 147-game AFL career, Burton said he is most excited about seeing Shaun Atley’s continued improvement.
The big man said Atley’s “ability to run and carry and kick the footy” will benefit the midfield, complementing the likes of skipper Andrew Swallow, Nick Dal Santo and Ben Cunnington.
After making last year’s preliminary final, Burton expects North’s on-field success to continue.
“With the momentum of last year’s finals series, winning finals should give the boys a lot of confidence going into this year,” he said.
