North’s depth is an asset but one thing is for sure - it will cause selection headaches before the Round 1 clash against Adelaide on Saturday March 26.
The 40 players that featured in the Roos’ pre-season campaign will be hoping for a start in the best-22 meaning there’ll be plenty of disappointed players.
Before you pick your Round 1 team, here’s North’s 2015 preliminary final side:
B: Michael Firrito, Scott Thompson, Shaun Atley
HB: Lachlan Hansen, Jamie Macmillan, Sam Gibson
C: Sam Wright, Jack Ziebell, Ben Jacobs
HF: Shaun Higgins, Drew Petrie, Nick Dal Santo
F: Kayne Turner, Jarrad Waite, Brent Harvey
Fol: Todd Goldstein, Andrew Swallow, Ben Cunnington
Int: Lindsay Thomas, Robbie Tarrant, Taylor Garner, Ben Brown
Forwards
Will North continue playing three tall forwards? If so, you could consider Petrie and Waite automatic inclusions leaving one spot free.
As for the half-forwards and small-forwards – North has an embarrassment of riches.
The likes of Shaun Higgins (if medically cleared) and Brent Harvey are locks, leaving a logjam for the remaining positions.
Defenders
Here is where it gets tricky, and a lot depends on what structure you would like to take into Round 1.
Adelaide has a high-powered attack with the likes of Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins, Tom Lynch, Charlie Cameron and Eddie Betts all capable of doing serious damage. The mix of the North defence has to be just right.
We’ll give you Tarrant and Thompson as a start, you pick the rest.
Midfielders
Barring any unexpected setbacks, it would be hard to leave out Todd Goldstein, Andrew Swallow, Ben Cunnington, Jack Ziebell, Nick Dal Santo and Daniel Wells for Round 1. This covers both the followers and centre line in the 22 to take on the Crows.
It leaves two slots free and there are multiple options available including using Jacobs and Gibson as defensive midfielders.
Make your choice.
