They’re great friends off the field and now they’re forming a strong bond inside North’s forward 50; housemates Cam Zurhaar and Nick Larkey both booting bags of five goals in Sunday’s win over St Kilda.
As to who claims the bragging rights as the MVP for the day, well, Larkey is happy to fly under the radar.
“I was lucky to get on the end of a few. His (Zurhaar’s) were the better goals, the snap and banana from the boundary,” the number 20 told North Media.
Zurhaar laid back as ever, a far cry from his unrelenting approach out on the ground.
“I can’t complain … kicking five goals with my housemate, it’s pretty fun,” he said.
“We give each other a fair bit of stick, we joke around with Dec Watson at home. We’ve come a lot closer and we play a lot better together.”
While the Larkey/Zurhaar/Watson household is sure to be a happy one after the latter also played a key role in North’s VFL win, the emerging forwards were quick to shift the focus.
“It’s just not the boys who kicked goals … it’s Tarryn Thomas and Mason (Wood) and Kayne (Turner) who apply all the pressure,” Zurhaar said.
“We were just lucky enough to get on the end of a few, but it was a massive contribution from the whole side.”
The five-goal heroes might face some stiff opposition for the three Brownlow votes too, with Jy Simpkin racking up a career-high 36 disposals in perhaps his best ever game.
“I thought he (Simpkin) had 50. He absolutely killed it in the midfield,” Zurhaar said.
“Him and Ben Cunnington led the way in the midfield, and Jed (Anderson) is just unstoppable.
“It helps the forwards when it comes out of the stoppage so clean, we can lead up and get the footy.”
Zurhaar has now booted 18 goals this season, while Larkey has 17.
