North Melbourne is uniting with the Tasmanian football community, throwing its support behind local footballer Ryan Wiggins.

Ryan suffered a devastating injury on July 3, which left him in a critical condition and in intensive care.

He was flown to Melbourne’s Austin Hospital on July 7.

The 26-year-old plays for Cygnet Football Club in the Southern Football League, having previously represented Lauderdale for 15 years.

He has also represented Tasmania at state level.

The SFL postponed its senior, reserves, colts and women’s matches last weekend out of respect to Ryan’s family and fiancée.

"Ryan is a much-loved and respected member of the Cygnet football club and the SFL," a league spokesperson said.

"The thoughts of the entire SFL executive are with all those impacted across the football family."

North Melbourne is calling on football supporters to show their support for Ryan and his family, by making a donation via a special gofundme page, set up by his best friend.

Contributions will go towards costs of surgery, rehabilitation and ongoing care.
