North Melbourne’s VFLW side has registered its fourth loss in a tight contest against the Darebin Falcons at Arden Street.
It was the Falcons who began their momentum in the opening quarter, kicking two early goals to North’s one, leading the race at the first break.
The Kangaroos responded with a game-changing second quarter, led by the midfield brigade of Meagan Kiely, Katelyn Cox and Molly Eastman. They led by one point at the half-time break.
Darebin came out swinging in the third quarter, keeping North scoreless, while impacting with two critical goals of its own.
Following the Falcons' powerful third quarter, North found it too hard to respond – resulting in a tough 12-point-loss.
VFLW Coach Cheyne Webster said games like the clash against Darebin would be invaluable learning curves for his young side.
“As a young and developing group this season, we’ll at times learn some tough lessons along the way – this was one of them,” he told North Media.
Captain Kiely finished with 23 disposals, including 9 inside 50s and 7 clearances. Airlie Runnalls finished with 24 touches and 8 marks, while in a best-on-ground performance, Molly Eastman finished with 28 possessions and seven rebound 50s.
“Meagan is having a breakout season, as is Molly. Their leadership as well as how they continue to execute their roles under pressure so well is a credit to them,” Webster said.
The North coach is confident that going forward, these tough lessons will keep his side in good stead.
“We continue to find out what our group is capable of and where we need to improve, and that’s important going forward,” Webster added.
