Human wrecking-ball and contested ball winner, Jed Anderson, could return to the North lineup this week, adding some much needed grunt in the Kangaroos’ engine room.

Meanwhile all eyes will be on the fitness of champion midfielder, Ben Cunnington, as he ramps up his fitness following a nasty concussion.

A quad strain means Luke McDonald could be out for an extended period, joining the much-needed Robbie Tarrant, Trent Dumont and Kyron Hayden on the injury list.

With at least one spot available following Curtis Taylor’s concussion and doubts over Aidan Corr, North Media takes a look at those in the mix ahead of Saturday night’s Round 2 matchup with the Suns at Metricon Stadium.

Midfielders

Aside from the experienced Anderson and Cunnington, draftee Will Phillips will be pressing his case after an impressive showing in the VFL against Sandringham, playing on the likes of Zak Jones and Brad Crouch.

“He’s still got some areas to work on, but I thought he played really well to his strengths today,” North VFL coach, Leigh Adams, said.

Aaron Hall could make his return following an adductor strain.

Forwards

Bringing real x-factor, draftees Eddie Ford and Phoenix Spicer did their chances of selection no harm after strong showings in the VFL. Ford displayed real grit after a hit to the face.

“(Ford) got better as the game went on and that’s a credit to him … it was a good effort for him to break his nose and get back out there and compete,” Adams said.

The big-bodied Tom Campbell could come in as a ruck/forward option, allowing Josh Walker to go back as a replacement for Corr.

“(Campbell’s) ability to win clearances, follow up and take marks was great. He was outstanding today,” Adams said.

“He’s been doing it for years in the VFL … he’s really been able to bring the group together and has been educating our young blokes.”

Defenders

With Port small forward, Orazio Fantasia, getting on top of the Roos with 4.4 to his name, the match committee might look to Atu Bosenavulagi for his first game for the club. The 20-year stood out down back in the VFL, according to Adams.

“(Bosenavulagi) defended really well … he was really clean around the contest today … and had nice bits of play with his offence.”
