Tom Curran has been hit with another shattering setback and will require season ending surgery on his troublesome right foot.

The bad news came after the 19-year-old experienced soreness in the same foot which hampered his first year at the club in 2012.

“Tom’s played a number of games (for North Ballarat) and has been feeling good but he had a return of his foot pain last week so we investigated it straight away and it turns out we need to do surgery again,” Director of Medical Services Steve Saunders told NMFC.com.au on Monday.

“We need to re-orientate the screw in the bone and do a bone graft as well so it heals better. The old screw comes out and a new one will go in.”

Despite the disappointment of going back into a moonboot and having to endure a long rehabilitation process after surgery, the 195cm forward is in good spirits according to Saunders.

“He’s a really strong, resilient young man so he’s coping very well. Unfortunately for Tommy, he has to go through all that again but at least the upside for him is he knows what it’s all about this time around.

“It will take 16 weeks of rehabilitation to get him back to full training again, then we think he’ll be in a good position to start pre-season completely rehabilitated.”

It may be a case of one step back to go forward for the young Roo but Saunders is confident Curran will come out the other side stronger than ever after some striking performances in the VFL.

“The coaching staff have seen plenty of Tom that has really impressed them and they’re really excited to see him get his foot right and return to football,” Saunders said.

“There’s plenty of other things that go into Tom Curran being the elite footballer we know he can be.  We can be working on those things from the get go.”

Curran will have surgery on Wednesday.

“He’s got to go home for a bit of TLC and then we’ll have a couple of other new roles for him that will help the club and help him as well.”
