One of North Melbourne’s most consistent performers in recent seasons, Trent Dumont has been among the Roos’ best again in 2020.
Predominantly a wingman prior to this year, the 25-year-old has spent more time inside, and is averaging career-best numbers in tackles and clearances, despite shortened quarters.
“I think I’ve started to figure out how my game looks, and I’m looking to keep improving that,” Dumont told North Media.
“In saying that, I still think I need to go to another level with my performances, and I think I will with another pre-season.”
One of the reasons behind Dumont’s increased midfield minutes has been the absence of Ben Cunnington.
Cunnington’s absence with injury has cost the Roos in terms of results, but has provided more opportunity to Dumont and the next generation of North’s midfield.
“We miss Cunners (Cunnington) a lot, he’s a superstar in our team and of the competition,” Dumont said.
“But everyone is getting a bit more an opportunity on the inside.
“If you add Cunners and some more experience to the performance the midfield put in on the weekend, it gives us confidence going forward.”
Jy Simpkin has taken his game to another level, and has impressed Dumont.
“Jy’s a star,” Dumont said.
“You could see it (his development) a mile away.
“He’s an unreal bloke, and he works so hard. He’s got talent, but he works as hard as anyone.
“I’ve got massive respect for Jy.”
Dumont also has one of the best seats in the house to view Jed Anderson’s weekly tackling masterclasses.
“Sometimes he takes two or three out,” Dumont laughed.
“He’s been unbelievable this year, and is relishing more midfield time.
“He’s been really impressive, especially in the last month or so.
“I remember when he used to play for Box Hill and he’d take me out, so I’m glad he’s on my team now.”
