On This Day - May 5
AFL/VFL games on May 5 for the North Melbourne Football Club have been unfortunately highlighted by inaccuracy.
Round 6 2007
North Melbourne 7.3 (45), 8.7 (55), 12.13 (85), 16.15 (111)
Sydney 1.5 (11), 3.7 (25), 8.7 (55), 14.11 (95)
Goals: Grant (4), Campbell (3), Jones (3), Petrie (2)
Brownlow Medal: 3 - Grant (NM), 2 - Wells (NM), 1 - Fosdike (SYD)
In his first game of the season, Jesse Smith gathered 16 touches in North Melbourne's defeat of Sydney. 2007 would prove to be a breakout year for the father-son selection in the 2004 Draft. Playing every game for the rest of the season, Smith provided great drive off half-back and capped his year with a best on ground performance in the semi-final win against Hawthorn.
Unfortunately injuries curtailed his promising career and prevented him from fulfilling his undoubted talent. Smith retired at the end of 2010 with only 27 games to his name.
Did You Know? This win is North Melbourne's only triumph over the Swans in its last ten premiership meetings. With five of the losses producing margins of 30-points or more, Sydney has had North Melbourne's number in recent times.
Round 6 1990
Carlton 3.1 (19), 6.7 (43), 14.8 (92), 20.13 (133)
North Melbourne 4.6 (30), 8.11 (59), 11.15 (81), 14.19 (103)
Goals: Longmire (6), Krakouer (2), McDonald (2)
Brownlow Medal: 3 - Meldrum (CAR), 2 - Rock (NM), 1 - Hawker (CAR)
The foundations of the side that would dominate the 90's was being laid and evidence could be seen in the team sheet for this game. With the exception of Donald McDonald, not a single player on this day was over the age of 25.
A 19-year old John Longmire and 18-year old Wayne Carey played their 33rd and 10th games respectively.
Did You Know? Former AFL Chief Operating Officer and current FFA Chief Executive Officer Ben Buckley was North Melbourne's vice-captain at the time.
Round 6 1984
Collingwood 4.6 (30), 10.9 (69), 13.12 (90), 15.18 (108)
North Melbourne 0.5 (5), 5.7 (37), 11.9 (75), 12.15 (87)
Goals: Hodgeman (3), Krakouer (2)
Brownlow Medal: 3 - Cloke (COL), 2 - Twomey (COL), 1 - Hodgeman (NM)
After two wins in a row to kick start its season, North entered the Round 6 clash with Collingwood knowing a win would draw it level with the Magpies on points. However it wasn't to be, as a goalless first quarter had the Kangaroos playing from behind all day.
It would prove to be a turning point of the season as North didn’t win another game until Round 17.
Did You Know? Ross Smith, father of Jesse, played just his third game on this day in 1984. Playing more than 220 games for North Melbourne over his 14 season career, Smith was a mainstay of the side.
Round 5 1979
North Melbourne 4.12 (36), 8.13 (61), 13.20 (98), 19.24 (138)
South Melbourne 2.1 (13), 9.9 (63), 9.12 (66), 12.16 (88)
Goals: Glendinning (6), Boyse (2), Byrne (2), Ebert (2), Payne (2), Schimmelbusch (2)
An incredible 16 scoring shots in the first quarter meant nothing when North Melbourne entered half time two points behind South Melbourne. The long break led to a renewed focus on defence, as South Melbourne only managed three goals in the second half allowing North Melbourne to run-out comfortable 50-point winners.
Did You Know? Malcolm Blight and Ross Glendinning led a fearsome forward line in 1979, the duo combined for 119 goals. Glendinning played 190 games for North Melbourne before returning home to West Coast to become its inaugural captain.
Round 5 1973
North Melbourne 2.14 (26), 3.16 (34), 8.18 (66), 13.20 (98)
Collingwood 3.4 (22), 7.15 (57), 10.17 (77), 15.19 (109)
Goals: Ryan (3), Davis (2), Sutton (2)
A stunningly inaccurate first quarter would come back to haunt North Melbourne in the game's later stages. Collingwood, the eventual minor premiers, prevailed by 11-points in a game the Kangaroos had in their grasp but let slip.
Round 3 1962
Carlton 5.3 (33), 9.5 (59), 11.7 (73), 16.14 (110)
North Melbourne 3.3 (21), 3.3 (21), 6.6 (42), 7.6 (48)
Goals: Dugdale (2), Gaudion (2), McCarthy (2)
After two close losses to begin the 1962 season, North Melbourne entered its Round 3 match against Carlton hoping to notch its first win. Carlton had other ideas and controlled the game from start to finish for a comprehensive 62-point win.
Round 4 1956
Carlton 2.1 (13), 8.5 (53), 11.8 (74), 15.12 (102)
North Melbourne 3.3 (21), 7.7 (49), 10.14 (74), 13.16 (94)
Goals: Dugdale (4), Spencer (4), Eastmure (2)
Both Carlton and North Melbourne were struggling during the early stages of 1956 and had identical records in Round 4. When Carlton narrowly prevailed, it sparked a winning run that lasted until Round 9, leaving the Kangaroos to ponder what might have been.
Round 3 1951
Footscray 6.2 (38), 6.3 (39), 9.7 (61), 10.9 (69)
North Melbourne 0.0 (0), 4.8 (32), 4.10 (34), 5.13 (43)
Goals: Brooker (1), Foote (1), Smith (1), Spencer (1), Thornton (1)
After one of its few scoreless quarters in history, somehow North Melbourne only trailed Footscray by seven-points at half time. A side with four debutants on the day, North unsurprisingly fell off the pace in the second half and lost by 26-points.
Round 3 1945
North Melbourne 1.2 (8), 6.7 (43), 9.8 (62), 14.15 (99)
Geelong 3.7 (25), 6.8 (44), 7.11 (53), 10.15 (75)
Goals: Slater (5), Findlay (4), Dyer (3)
In a side that would make its first finals series, North Melbourne demonstrated fighting qualities for the first time. After two losses to begin the season, a third in succession may have killed its finals aspirations. A strong second quarter ended up being the catalyst for the turnaround to North Melbourne's 1945 season.
Round 1 1934
Fitzroy 1.6 (12), 2.12 (24), 8.13 (61), 11.16 (82)
North Melbourne 3.3 (21), 6.6 (42), 8.8 (56), 10.11 (71)
Goals: Fitzmaurice (3), Smith (2)
Travelling to Brunswick Street to begin 1934, a close defeat wasn't the worst way to kick off the season. However, it soon became evident things weren't going to improve any time soon. 1934 ended up being a winless season for North as is was rooted to the bottom of the VFL ladder.
Round 3 1928
St Kilda 2.2 (14), 5.5 (35), 7.9 (51), 11.11 (77)
North Melbourne 3.9 (27), 6.9 (45), 8.15 (63), 10.15 (75)
Goals: Coutts (2), McDowell (2), Murphy (2), Saunders (2)
Looking to make a jump into the top four in the early stages of just its fourth season in the VFL, North looked to be in the box seat at three quarter time. But the Junction Oval crowd brought St Kilda home strongly, resulting in a heartbreaking two-point loss.
