NORTH Melbourne captain Brent Harvey says having Adam Simpson floating around the club for the remainder of the season is likely to strengthen his view that his former teammate will make an outstanding coach.

Speaking from Arden Street on Monday morning, Harvey lamented the fact his team was unable to win against Carlton on Friday night in Simpson’s final match in North Melbourne colours.

Simpson has hung up his boots to move onto the next chapter of his life, which appears to be in the coaching box.

And Harvey says from what he knows of the two-time premiership winner and club best and fairest, he’ll start from a strong position.

"At what level he gets to, whether he wants to be an AFL coach one day or just an assistant or in a development role, he will be a sensational coach," Harvey said.

"His people skills are amazing, the young guys love him … he’s a great bloke and I know whether it’s next year, the year after [or] whenever he goes into coaching, he’s going to do a very, very good job."

Harvey said Simpson had been fortunate enough to play under some of the best tacticians of the modern era in Dean Laidley and Denis Pagan, and would have learned plenty during his 306-game career.

"He’s got his own philosophies [too], though," Harvey said. "He’s been doing a fair bit of work with the AFLPA in a coaching sort of sense and he’s a very smart man, so he’ll do very well."

Club chairman James Brayshaw has recommended that Simpson continue his coaching education at another AFL club, at least at an assistant level.

Harvey admitted it would be different without the No.7 jumper running out alongside him every week but expected to see him on a regular basis.

"He’s still going to be floating around for the rest of the year," he said. "He’s going to come in and help the young guys and probably work closely with Rocky (assistant coach Anthony Rock) through the midfield.

"He’s got some great ideas … it’s probably his little smart-arse jokes that are the things we’re going to miss the most."
