Aaron Edwards’ four goal haul was the catalyst behind North Ballarat's hard fought win against ladder leaders Williamstown on Saturday.

The Roosters led for most of the day, but with just five minutes remaining looked headed for their fourth straight loss as the Seagulls leveled the scores. However goals to Edwards and fellow Kangaroo Michael Wundke led North Ballarat to an impressive 21 point win.

It was a welcome return to form for Edwards. The 25 year-old has not played for North Melbourne since Round 12, but after being named as an emergency two weeks ago against Brisbane could be in for a recall.

In more good news for Kangaroos fans, Josh Smith was also devastating up forward and in the ruck.

The 2008 debutant played a pinch hitting role through the middle with injuries to North Ballarat's ruckmen and was one of the most important players in the closing stages as his team held on for the win. He was awarded best on ground honours for the strong performance.

Cruize Garlett and Ed Lower also put their hands up for senior selection, both had plenty of the ball through the midfield and set up countless attacks, while veteran defender Shannon Watt will hope to add to his game tally of 154 by the end of the season after a commanding effort down back.

A top of the table finish now looks realistic for the reigning premiers. It’s now just one win from top spot with a game in hand but has three games against teams in the top eight remaining. The Roosters will need to be at their best to repeat their 2008 triumph.

Warren Benjamin could earn a promotion after a promising performance in the reserves. He picked up 24 possessions and pumped the ball inside 50 on seven occasions.
