Todd Goldstein’s hopes of boarding a plane to Perth this weekend have been significantly enhanced after a best on ground performance for North Ballarat in the VFL on Sunday.
Speaking to kangaroos.com.au during a recovery session at Aegis Park on Monday, Goldstein was surprised to learn he’d notched up an amazing 64 hit-outs, mainly against Casey Scorpion Jake Spencer.
“I had no idea. I knew there were a lot of stoppages and I’d won my share of them but I would never have gone close to guessing I had 64. It’s a pleasing result personally, however we didn’t get the win so overall it was a disappointing day,” Goldstein said.
“I needed to go down to the Roosters and have an impact and although we didn’t win, hopefully I added something positive to the side in some way.”
On Thursday last week the 23-year old was told he wouldn’t be playing for North Melbourne against the Gold Coast Suns and it was news that hit him hard, but only for a short period of time.
“Obviously I was disappointed initially after being told by Brad (Scott) that I was out, but I was also able to see it as an opportunity to go back to the VFL and gain some form and confidence in my game.
“I’ve got to be happy with my effort yesterday but in saying that, if I don’t get back into the team this week, I need to continue to work on all the things I need to improve and fight my way back in.”
Goldstein also had 22 disposals, 13 of them contested, six marks and two goals; statistics that should put him back in the frame to play the Eagles.
“I’d love to be able to get on the plane and go to Perth but I’m not expecting too much at this stage. Hamish was great on his own against the Suns so I’ll just have to wait and see how the week unfolds.”
In the Roos’ last meeting with West Coast at Patersons Stadium, Goldstein was a late withdrawal and Cam Pedersen played out of position against Dean Cox in the ruck.
Since then, Nic Naitanui has come on strong to form a double threat and North may just need Goldstein firing in order to combat the pair.
“I felt like I did everything I could in the VFL but there are always plenty of things to work on. I think overall I did as much as I could but I don’t know if one week will be enough or the coaches will want to see a bit more before bringing me back in. Either way, I need to replicate that form every week until I do get picked and then step it up even more.”
On the verge of all-Australian selection in 2011, Goldstein acknowledges his form has been down so far this year.
“My confidence has taken a hit which hasn’t helped me. Last year I really did believe in myself and I’ve probably allowed a few doubts to creep in. I’m just working through this bad patch right now and I’m hoping yesterday is an important part of getting back to my best.”
