NORTH MELBOURNE coach Brad Scott is hoping the AFL will take notice of a special Good Friday training session he is holding at Arden Street as the club re-ignites its campaign to play a match on the holiday.

The AFL is reluctant to schedule an AFL match on the religious day but Scott said his club was eager to see the Easter round spread more evenly across the four-day weekend.

This year round two begins on Thursday night when the Brisbane Lions host Carlton but again there will be a hiatus on Friday, before matches resume on Saturday. Easter football concludes on Monday when Hawthorn and Geelong clash at the MCG.Several clubs have requested to the AFL in recent years to play on Good Friday but the League, steadfast in its view, is yet to fixture a match on the day. However Scott said his club would continue to push the cause.

“North were really the innovators there in terms of wanting to play a game on Good Friday,” Scott said from Arden St on Thursday morning.

“We absolutely maintain that we’d love to play a game on Friday night on Good Friday. Some other clubs have expressed an interest as well but we certainly were the initiators of that [idea], so we’d love to play that game.”

The Kangaroos hope fans will show their support for football on Good Friday by attending the club’s final tune-up before taking on St Kilda.

“We’re going to train at 10.30 tomorrow and again we’d encourage our supporters to come down … we hope that’s a bit of a prelude for hopefully a Good Friday game at some stage.

“We think [a Good Friday game] is a great concept. Other codes are playing games on Good Friday now, so we feel we’d like to innovate there and be the first team to do it.

“We think it’d be an exciting way to go to have a Thursday night game, Friday night game and spread the round out a little bit more.”

For fans who attend, Scott promised a visit from the Easter Bunny and an Easter egg or two.
