Forward thinking
Disappointed by the performance of his team against the Hawks, Brad Scott will take encouragement from the efforts of those in the VFL.
Werribee was dominant in its 109-point win against Collingwood on Saturday, and the performances of Ben Warren, Robbie Tarrant and Ben McKinley warrant attention from the Kangaroos’ coaching staff.
Warren booted six goals to take his season tally to 25, while Tarrant was just as good with five of his own. McKinley chimed in with four goals as the trio formed a potent combination up forward.
With Prime Minister Julia Gillard in attendance, Cameron Pedersen was another to excel with stints in the ruck, defensively and in attack. He finished with 30 disposals, enough for best-on-ground honours.
Majak Daw showed his value in a somewhat unfamiliar role down back, though he earned most praise from Development Coach John Lamont for his hit-outs and follow-up work in the middle.
Malcolm Lynch played his ‘best game of the year’ according to Lamont and finished with 16 disposals and two goals, while Sam Gibson was able to shake a hard tag to gather 21 touches and a handy two majors.
The Tigers were dominant on the scoreboard with 44 scoring shots to 15, but would also be delighted with the efforts of their defenders including a number of Kangaroos who had an impact.
Ayden Kennedy finished with 23 touches and continues to grow in confidence and stature down back, likewise Will Sierakowski who racked up 23 disposals of his own. Rookie Brad Mangan was influential with 24 possessions, and Scott McMahon (15 disposals) would be delighted to have gotten through unscathed in his first outing since Round 4.
