Father-son recruit River Stevens has taken out a surprise shuttle run as the Roos sweltered through an early morning session on Monday.

The 1.8km run, consisting of five repetitions of 40m, 60m and 80m returns, was sprung on the players just as the mercury hit 30 degrees at 10:30am.

In just his first pre-season, Stevens won out over perennial podium finishers in Darcy Tucker and Dylan Stephens.

Fellow first-year player Finn O’Sullivan came in sixth to match his result in November’s 2km endurance test, while experienced recruits Caleb Daniel and Jack Darling came in ninth and 10th respectively.

It capped off an impressive session for Stevens, the son of two-time premiership player and former captain Anthony having earlier been celebrated by teammates for three consecutive spoils or intercepts in a pressing exercise.
