Werribee return home for Box Hill clash
The Werribee Tigers will be looking to put last weekend's performance behind them after a disappointing 66 point loss to arch rival Williamstown last Sunday aft
In trying conditions, nothing seemed to go right for the Tigers leaving Coach Simon Atkins to ponder what might have been. Williamstown playing on their home ground for the first time of the year were able to adapt a lot quicker than Werribee to the conditions and were the better team on the day.
This Sunday Werribee returns to Chirnside Park and their opponents are the Box Hill Hawks under coach Brendan Bolton. The Hawks have won their opening two games of the season and sit 4th on the VFL ladder.
Daniel Harris was a shining light for the Tigers and was clearly Werribee's best. Others that could hold their head up high included Robbie Costello Nathan Grima and captain Dom Gleeson. Alan Obst can also be included in this group, his over head marking in windy conditions and a wet slippery football stood out to me.
The Box Hill Haws are in fine form going into this game. They toppled the Coburg Tigers for the first time in 5 years in an ANZAC Day thriller.
Chirnside Park has not been a happy hunting ground for Box Hill, the last time they beat Werribee at home was all the way back in 1991 (18 years ago) but this is a different team with a new coach, some young emerging talent and some old hands like former Collingwood player Sam Isles and retired Melbourne veteran Adam Yze. The Hawks will be a huge test for the young Tigers side.
The best thing about our game however, is that a lot can change in a week of football and because the length of a season allows a team with a bad performance the previous week a chance to redeem themselves the following. A hard week on the track, an honest assessment by the playing group and some confidence and belief injected back amongst the playing group the Tigers can achieve this on Sunday. With the record of Box Hill at Werribee standing as it does. The Tigers will win in a close one.
