North Melbourne champion Wayne Carey believes his former club’s draw in 2012 could give it an advantage at the business end of the season.

The Kangaroos lost their first four games last year, and seven of their first nine. But following a Round 5 victory over the Suns, they sit in seventh place on the table with a 60 per cent winning record.

''Last year the Roos had a really tough draw,'' Carey told The Age.

''They went to Perth twice and played Collingwood and Geelong in their first six games. This year they've got a better draw, so it does even out.''

Brad Scott’s team lost seven games by three goals or less in 2011 and finished in ninth place, but the famous number 18 says finals should be the aim this time around.

“The fact they play GWS and Gold Coast twice gives them an advantage on the other teams around the same mark, there's no question about that,” he added.

“They would be disappointed if they didn't make the finals. And they would say that themselves.''
