It’s one of the most unforgettable games between North Melbourne and Essendon, but the 1998 Qualifying Final is memorable not just for the on-field action.

Instead, its unique place in history is due the remarkable circumstances which started well before the first bounce.

When Kevin Sheedy labelled then North executives Greg Miller and Mark Dawson ‘marshmallows’, it brought about a war of words and resulted in one of the most hyped matches in recent times.

“He’d be a pink marshmallow Dawson, and Miller would be a white marshmallow. That’s about where I see those softies, when it gets down to that sort of stuff,” Sheedy said.

Even Channel Seven was happy to buy into the saga heavily branding the broadcast ‘The Marshmallow Game’.

As it turns out, North and its supporters had the last laugh. Sheedy and Bombers lost the match and the head coach was pelted with marshmallows at the end when he strolled around the boundary line.

The Kangaroos happily made their way into the Preliminary Final.
