In response to today’s article in The Age regarding promotional footballs being used at the Grand Final Breakfast, North Melbourne interim CEO Cam Vale would like to make the following comments:

“Firstly we are shocked and deeply disappointed with the information that has come to light regarding the use of child labour in the manufacturing of footballs.

“Our stance on the issue is clear; child labour and exploitation of workers is abhorrent and unacceptable.

“We have been in discussions with Sherrin which has agreed it would not be appropriate to accept payment for the footballs. Instead, the club will donate the cost to World Vision’s Child Rescue - a program focused on protecting vulnerable children living in horrific circumstances.

“In addition to this, the club is committed to making an additional donation and is in discussions with all stakeholders about increasing this contribution.

“We want to reiterate our disappointment and intent to bring attention to the issue of child labour and exploitation.

“More details will be announced at the event including our plans for the footballs.”

What is World Vision’s Child Rescue?
Some children live in unstable environments or have no parents, no community framework or support network to turn to for protection. Simply because they don't have a birth certificate or fixed address, many of these children are deprived of their basic rights to protection, to go to school and to receive healthcare. Through Child Rescue you can help protect children at risk, and provide support and rehabilitation for children who have been the victims of exploitation and abuse.

Who does Child Rescue help?
Each day, there are children all over the world being tricked, forced and sold into slavery, hazardous labour, combat, prostitution. Millions end up in brothels, factories, sweatshops and private homes. We don’t see them or hear their suffering. They have no voice.
