Trade Wrap: October 17
Lion Longer appeals to Saints, while Collingwood gets active.
There is no offer yet from the Saints, who need to bolster their ruck spots after sending Ben McEvoy to Hawthorn in the surprise deal that kick started Gillette Trade Period.
The McEvoy deal was a jolt to Longer's aspirations, as he had declared a wish to join the Hawks.
Now Hawthorn is out of the picture and it comes down to whether he wants to continue his career with the Brisbane Lions, where he has played nine games since being the No.8 pick in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, or to move to Victoria, closer to where he grew up.
New Lions coach Justin Leppitsch has made Longer's retention a priority and flew directly from a Bali holiday to Melbourne to meet him.
"He has a bit to ponder," Longer's manager Paul Connors said.
The Saints have also expressed some interest in another of Connors' clients, premiership ruckman Darren Jolly.
After being delisted from Collingwood, Jolly could join the Saints without any trade, whereas the Lions have made it clear they have put a high price on Longer.
The Saints have their hands full with a decision yet to be made over Nick Dal Santo.
St Kilda is understood to be nervous about whether or not it can realise enough value for the midfielder if he leaves via free agency.
The free agency deadline at 2pm on Friday might accelerate business, with many deals depending on the compensation picks awarded for losing free agents, with Hawthorn, Collingwood, Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond waiting to see what they will receive.
West Coast is discussing a swap of draft picks with Collingwood that would aid its push to land Elliot Yeo from the Brisbane Lions.
AFL.com.au understands this would see the Eagles part with their first round pick (No.6 overall) in exchange for the Magpies' compensation pick for Dale Thomas (expected to be No.11 overall) and pick No.27.
The Eagles would then be expected to trade selection No.27 for Yeo, holding off Fremantle, which has remained interested in the 20-year-old.
It is understood the Eagles see little difference between picks No.6 and No.11. Collingwood, however, clearly has some motivation to push up the draft order.
Eagles list manager Craig Vozzo told Gillette Trade Radio good progress had been made on Thursday over Yeo's future.
The Magpies were in talks with Greater Western Sydney on Thursday to see if a trade could be arranged that would land Heath Shaw at the Giants, the club he nominated on Monday night as his preferred destination.
The sticking point remains whether a straight swap between Shaw and Taylor Adams is enough or whether an exchange of late picks is needed to sweeten the deal.
Collingwood has a few other irons in the fire with Sydney Swans Tony Armstrong and Jesse White expected to land at the club in due course.
Sam Docherty is set to join Carlton, but the Lions appear reluctant to confirm a deal before other trades have gone through.
It is understood the Lions are seeking to finalise deals for Yeo and midfielder Jared Polec before pushing through Docherty's move.
"I'm keen to get it out of the way and so is Sam," Docherty's manager, Matt Bain of Stride Sports, told AFL.com.au.
"Hopefully it's not too long until he becomes a Carlton player."
The Lions and Port Adelaide met on Thursday to discuss a trade for Polec, who has requested a move to the Power after three seasons in Brisbane.
Recruited with pick No.5 in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft, Polec nominated Port Adelaide as his preferred club on Wednesday, but Adelaide remains interested in the 21-year-old.
The paperwork to officially trade Viv Michie from Fremantle to Melbourne for pick No.54 was lodged as discussions centred around whether the Demons would accept an offer from Greater Western Sydney that might land the Giants pick No.2.
The Giants' Tomas Bugg has been suggested as one of the players being offered to Melbourne in a package that might satisfy the Demons.
Bugg is understood to be unlikely to be making a move from the Giants, where he has impressed in his 32 games.
Scott Gumbleton has reportedly made his intentions clear to Essendon, with a trade to Fremantle being sought.
Fairfax Media reported on Thursday that Essendon wants pick No.33 while the Dockers want to pass on its new pick No.54 to secure the 25-year-old key forward.
North Melbourne's Luke Delaney is waiting for the Dal Santo decision to be made before his trade can be worked through. He may or may not be part of that trade.
Delaney told the Kangaroos website that deciding to leave the club was a difficult decision.
Former Sydney Swans ruckman Shane Mumford, who played in the club's 2012 premiership, has already said he wants to join the Giants.
His manager Anthony McConville told Gillette Trade Radio he thought a deal to get Mumford to the Giants was only a day or two away.
The eclectic career of Jarrad Grant is set to continue with the Western Bulldogs after he signed a two-year deal with the club.
Grant, 24, had attracted a little interest from other clubs, however his good form at the end of the season won him the extended deal that will enable him to add to his 58-game career.
