Brad Scott has played down talk of giving Todd Goldstein a rest saying it’s important to look at the ruckman’s season rather than just last week’s match against Carlton.

“When you talk about the best ruckmen in the competition, he’s certainly right up there, in my view, in the top half-dozen,” Scott told to media.

“His role hasn’t changed all year. Matty Kreuzer played well on the weekend and beat him. By my analysis that’s the first time Goldy’s been beaten this year.

“To basically beat his opponent 15 out of 16 occasions says a lot about Goldy.”

Despite only being rotated 23 times in 16 games, Scott believes Goldstein’s time on the ground wasn’t an issue.

“I think it’s short sighted to say that Goldy was beaten once or people have looked at some stats and realised in Round 17 that Goldy doesn’t get interchanged much and then realise it’s an issue.

“Goldy was in the All Australian squad a couple of years ago and has been at that standard playing exactly the way he’s been playing so we’re always looking at options.”

However, there are numerous options at VFL level who could perform adequately if Scott and the match committee opted to slightly change the structure of the side.

“Dan Currie was back from injury last week and played well,” Scott added.

“He’s going to push for selection and I genuinely hope that he breaks his way into our side at some stage this year.

“We know that Majak Daw can come in and play ruck and forward as well.

“It’s not something that we just put on the shelf and stop analysing – we’re analysing it all the time.”

Meanwhile the General Manager of Football position will become vacant at the end of the season and according to the senior coach, it’s one of the most important positions around.

“Fortunately we’ve got some really good developing leaders in our executive department.

“We’ve got some internal candidates who would be well worthy of consideration, but I know the club will do their due diligence and look far and wide for the best candidate.

The position is arguably the equal of a senior coach in its importance, something not lost on Scott.

“Everyone needs that support (from a GM of football). You can have all the confidence in your own ability in the world but you definitely need a sounding board, definitely need people to hold you to account.

“I need that as much as anyone else. If you look through history, every successful club has got one.”
