Talks about a new contract for home games in Hobart have begun with North CEO Carl Dilena meeting with key stakeholders this week.

Dilena and the AFL's general manager of broadcasting, scheduling and major projects Simon Lethlean, attended a series of meetings on Thursday.

The club has been open regarding its intentions to extend the current deal beyond 2014.

"What we'll be looking at is a contract for the next couple of years," Dilena said.

"The AFL is keen to align everything so that when Hawthorn comes out of their deal, the two contracts align."

Dilena said new Tasmania Premier Will Hodgman liked what he heard.

"I've met Will a few times and he's a great supporter of football,? he said.

"The starting point is looking at renewing for at least the two games, and if there is an appetite we'd be keen to explore it for a third game," he said.

An economic impact report stated North's two games out of Blundstone Arena injected $2.11 million last year alone.

"The AFL have said themselves it's 10 years before we get a team based in Tasmania so we've got to make sure in that time we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and keep hold of what we've got," Mr Hodgman said.

Representatives from the Hobart City Council, the RACT and TT-Line were also involved in talks and joined an inspection of the Blundstone Arena redevelopment.

"It's a great facility and there's obviously a bit to go with the new development," Mr Lethlean said.

"But it's exciting to have a 20,000-seat venue here next year.

"The Kangaroos like being down here and are keen to renew, so we are here helping with that and chatting about fixturing for next year and what dates do and don't work for games."

Ticket sales have already been strong for North's first game in Hobart for this season - the side will take on St Kilda in Round 17 on Saturday, July 12.
