Harvey tribunal reaction
Various media outlets have commented on Brent Harvey's potential one-match ban.
With a Tribunal hearing set for 5pm on Tuesday, hereβs how various media outlets have commented on the case.
The case for Harvey
Wayne Carey β Talking Footy
βI think itβs a disgrace. Itβs a terrible decision.
βHeβs got rubbed out because thereβs a bit of blood, thatβs the only reason.
βIf you look at other incidents this year, I mean seriously; the Daniel Merrett one comes to mind, Hawkins just last week.
β(Pedersenβs) had facial surgery and Merrett didnβt even get called up (to the Tribunal).
βIt was late and everyone at the time thought that was a shocking decision.
βIt is an absolute disgrace that we can rub a player (Harvey) out for a preliminary final for that.
Luke Darcy β Talking Footy
βI am outraged by it and I think the system is completely wrong and out of control.
βThereβs a tight legality around it that just doesnβt work. You need the law of common sense.β
Gerard Healy β On The Couch
βThe Kangaroos are entitled to go to the Tribunal and basically say there have been too many incidents setting a precedent.
βYou could argue Adam Goodes hit Selwood twice as hard as what Boomer did. Buddy Franklin at the SCGβ¦a fairly significant knock.
Joel Selwood β Footy Classified
βIt was very minor. I was running at speed, he was coming at me with speed, it happens, accidents happen.
Garry Lyon β Footy Classfied
βWhat the Tribunal has said on the back of the Hawkins finding is that you can punch someone in the head as long as itβs not too hard.
βI would argue that the contact there (in the Hawkins case)β¦is even more aggressive than what Harvey did to Joel Selwood.
βI donβt think the force was sufficient for (Harvey) to be sitting out a game, regardless of whether it was a preliminary final.
Jake King - Triple M
βCommon sense does not prevail any more.
βYouβve got one of the leaders of the North Melbourne Football Club saying he went to bump a bloke, now bumping is allowed in football, I know youβre not allowed to headbutt which he didnβt, it was an accidental head contact.
βThen you have the bloke who he actually bumped, the bloke he bumped said it was an accidental head clash.
βIf they both say itβs an accident, how about people start listening to the players for the first time and actually understand that it is a contact sport.
βBoomer didnβt go and deliberately hurt Joel, Joel saw it and braced him.
βYouβre meant to check someoneβs run, every player in the AFL does it.
βIf he gets done for this it is absolutely ridiculous, common sense is out of the game all together.β
The case against
Mike Sheahan β On The Couch
βThe Match Review Panel have rubbed him out on the basis that the incident was assessed as negligent, low and high contact. He couldnβt have wished for any better than that but his history has thrown him out.
βHe was able to escape with a reprimand if he had a clean history, but he didnβt and now heβs out.
Gerard Whateley β AFL 360
βFrom the moment it happened, under the rules as they stand today, there could only be one outcome.
Leigh Matthews β Channel 7
βItβs hard to say that was any different from the (Nathan) Fyfe incident, so he might get a week.β
Mark Robinson β AFL 360
βI keep wavering on this. I look it and think, do we really want a guy missing because of that? Thatβs probably my heart speaking, but my head tells me that heβs gone. That is the rule.β
