Completing a marathon is no easy task, but add another 7.8 kilometres and it becomes an even more impressive feat.

That’s the challenge the ‘Arden Street Hikers’ took on last year in the Upstream Challenge, with Director Stakeholder Relations and Club Culture Donald McDonald holding fond memories.

“It is a very physically demanding event, but when you cross the finish line there is a tremendous feeling of satisfaction in completing a 50 kilometre walk with a great group of people,” he recalls.

While McDonald is unable to complete the walk this year, over 1,000 others are expected to participate, walking from the Docklands to Donvale along the Yarra River.

All funds donated will go directly to four beneficiaries (The Summer Foundation, Leprosy Mission Australia, FareShare and The Isabella and Marcus Fund).

North Melbourne match committee member, Shinboner and Upstream Foundation founder Gordon Hoen is expecting up to half a million dollars to be raised.

This year, participants can choose their own distance, with a 20 kilometre event starting in Fairfield also sure to be popular.

There’s still time to register for either event, with entries closing on November 7.
