Matt Whitlock in VFL action for the Kangaroos in Round 2

Another impressive outing for North Melbourne's Reserves side has young tall Matt Whitlock edging closer to an early season debut.

In Saturday's physical VFL clash against Box Hill, the draftee played with poise as he gathered 27 disposals, nine intercepts and seven marks.

The performance backs up Whitlock's strong recent form and suggests he will be in consideration when the Kangaroos match committee selects the team for Saturday night's Round 4 AFL match against Sydney.

Fellow defender Griffin Logue is also in the mix for selection this week, having overcome a minor hamstring strain that has kept him sidelined for the past two games.

A conservative rehab approach was taken with the key backman, but he should be set to play his first match since the Round 1 defeat to the Western Bulldogs.

Kallan Dawson and Wil Dawson combined for 15 intercept possessions at Reserves level on Saturday afternoon as they continue their pushes for season debuts, while Miller Bergman picked up 16 touches in his first appearance of 2025.

Geordie Payne kicked two goals against the Hawks and led the way in the tackle count among the AFL-listed players, with seven.

The 2024 mid-season pick is yet to debut at the highest level but has been increasingly hitting the scoreboard and applying pressure on opposition defences.

A goal from 16 possessions along with 21 hitouts will also have Brynn Teakle's name in the conversation if senior coach Alastair Clarkson and the match committee wish add to a tall body to the line-up.

Jackson Archer remains unavailable for the Roos this week as he serves the final game of his three-match suspension for rough conduct.
