In The Mix - Round 3
A win against the Western Bulldogs eases the pressure on the match committee slightly. Port Adelaide is next up.
NMFC.com.au looks at those who could be pushing for a selection call-up. Have your say on potential changes in the comments at the bottom of the page.
#4 - Liam Anthony
The reason: Again collecting a lot of the ball, Anthony has been winning his own disposals much more often in recent games. Another 27 disposals through a mix of inside and outside ball against Collingwood's VFL side was promising.
The challenge: While Anthony has been winning his own ball for North Ballarat, it looks tough to play a similar role at AFL level with the players in front of him. It is a comparable situation for the outside midfielders.
#5 - Ben Jacobs
The reason: Jacobs has been consistently finding the ball and adding goal-kicking to his repertoire in recent weeks. Multiple heavy disposal games have the left footer in line for a possible recall to face his old side. He'll also be eyeing the fitness of vice-captain Jack Ziebell which could provide an opportunity.
The challenge: Much like Anthony, Jacobs has to contend with the midfielders theoretically 'on the fringe' of the side all being useful against the Bulldogs on Sunday. However, his ability to play slightly further forward could prove valuable to keep the Power midfielders accountable going the other way.
#11 - Michael Firrito
The reason: Firrito's experience is invaluable and he was important late for Werribee. Down to 19 men, the Tigers managed to hold on for a win in their final practice match.
The challenge: Port Adelaide tends to play few medium sized forwards, alternating between genuine key position forwards (Schulz, Butcher) and smalls (Wingard, Gray). It may be tough to find a natural matchup for the veteran.
#19 - Sam Wright
The reason: After being selected in the 22 for North's season opener against Essendon, it's clear Wright is very much in the plans for the side in the future, whether that be forward or back.
The challenge: Wright played no football at any level last weekend due to illness. Throwing the number 19 straight back into the fray for what is likely to be a hard-running, high-intensity game may be a step too far without a week of football in his legs.
#28 - Robin Nahas
The reason: Nahas was clearly North Ballarat's best forward for the first three quarters on Saturday, kicking three goals from 15 disposals.
The challenge: After a courageous mark, Nahas left the field with a mild knee injury. While it shouldn't cause the small forward to miss any game time, the match committee could be reluctant to promote him straight to the seniors.
#32 - Mason Wood
The reason: Wood worked well from his role as a half forward, pumping the ball inside 50 on five occasions for Werribee on Sunday. He also had seven marks and 14 disposals.
The challenge: Every midfield rotation will be precious on Sunday against Port Adelaide, so a debut for Wood may prevent extra runners. On the flip side, if he came in for an existing key forward, there is the possibility North will lack genuine targets in the forward 50 in the event of an injury during the game.
However it appears only a matter of time before the number 32 runs out in his first game for North.
#36 - Joel Tippett
The reason: Tippett continued his brilliant form, holding Magpie Quinten Lynch goalless while collecting 18 disposals, 8 marks and 6 spoils himself.
The challenge: With Port Adelaide rarely attempting to stretch the opposition for height, the only way in for Tippett this week would be a fitness worry to one of the incumbent key defenders.
#38 - Majak Daw
The reason: 10 disposals, 22 hit-outs and 2 goals against a Sandringham side featuring many St Kilda players showed Daw is rounding back to full match fitness after his interrupted pre-season.
The challenge: Daw was the recipient of an accidental knock to the head in the last term and did not return after making his way to the bench.
#42 - Scott McMahon
The reason: 21 disposals and 11 marks marked a strong bounce back game from McMahon after a quiet game for the senior side in Round 1.
The challenge: After being omitted from the senior side, has McMahon done enough in one week to redeem himself in the eyes of the match committee?
