Brisbane key defender Matt Maguire has been banned for one week for tripping Essendon’s Joe Daniher in Round 8.

The Lions opted against challenging the ban.

The last time the two sides met, North Melbourne’s three key forwards kicked 11 goals between them.

The MRP’s reasoning on the Maguire suspension

Matt Maguire, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a Level One tripping offence (80 demerit points, reprimand) for tripping Joe Daniher, Essendon, during the third quarter of the round eight match between the Brisbane Lions and Essendon, played at the Gabba on Saturday May 10, 2014.

In summary, due to his carry-over demerit points from a previous offence, his reprimand is increased to a one-match sanction, even with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has an existing bad record of 93.75 demerit points within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 173.75 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 130.31 demerit points and a one-match sanction.
