Leigh Adams has joined the chorus of North players highlighting the team’s vulnerability when it’s forced to carry players.

The recently re-signed midfielder/forward opened up on SEN’s Morning Glory about the Roos’ inconsistency admitting the side’s talented list has struggled to string quality games together.

“We’ve got those blokes that have played 50, 60, up to 100 games who are really gelling together now,” Adams said.

“With the competition being so even these days, if you’re just one or two per cent off you’re going to get found out by anyone.

“We came up against a pretty impressive Gold Coast side who taught us a lesson in intensity, that’s for sure.”

While the defensive side of North’s game has undoubtedly improved, it may have inadvertently afflicted other parts of the field.

“With the emphasis on defence we may have at times lost a bit of that attacking flair. It’s just about making sure we’re being quick with the ball but still being smart, not playing on blindly and running into their opposition.

“Obviously from last year we’ve been working pretty hard on our defensive side of the game to make sure we’re not getting overrun in those last quarters.

“We seem to be defending well at times but at other times having lapses and letting teams score against us.

Despite disappointing losses to Essendon, Collingwood and Gold Coast, there have been a number of positives.

Injuries have forced North to use 31 players this season, just two off the 33 who took the field through all of 2013.

“The good thing is that without our captain and vice-captain we’ve had some real positives. We’ve gone up to Sydney and beat them up there and also Freo in Perth,” Adams said.

“The frustrating thing is knowing our best footy can match it with pretty much anyone and then games like the Gold Coast we didn’t quite turn up to play and we got belted off the park.”
