In the Mix: Round 10

North Melbourne heads into Round 10 with a selection dilemma on its hands.

While Daniel Wells and Nathan Grima have already been ruled out, the good form of the Kangaroos’ VFL contingent and the likely return of Aaron Mullett will make things interesting at match committee.

With North playing on Friday night, all three emergencies will be at its disposal ahead of the Werribee and North Ballarat fixtures in the days following.

Have your say on any potential changes in the comments below.

#2 Brad McKenzie

The reason: The silky-skilled left-footer could be the man to split Geelong’s defence with precision delivery going inside 50.

After a couple of quiet games before the bye, he bounced back with 23 disposals at VFL level and will have regained some confidence.

The challenge: After a huge win over the Lions, North may be reluctant to make changes to a winning formula. Aaron Mullett is likely to be in the mix after missing last week, but multiple changes could be considered harsh after a dominant display.

#4 Liam Anthony

The reason: Anthony willed his side over the line in the VFL on Sunday with a big second half and some ferocious tackling, an asset he’s worked hard on in recent weeks.

His best game of the season last year against the Cats in Round 2, with 23 disposals and a goal.

The challenge:
The number 4 may find the narrow dimensions of Simonds Stadium difficult, with the ability to find space and time where he works best.

#5 Ben Jacobs

The reason:  Jacobs had been in strong form at VFL level before missing last week due to illness. He racked up 71 disposals in a fortnight at the Roosters.

A proven ball-winner, he had 15 disposals as a substitute in his most recent AFL appearance.

The challenge: Breaking into North’s in-form midfield will be no easy task after a dominant display against Brisbane.

While his form-line is strong, not playing last week will make things tough.

#11 Michael Firrito

The reason: The veteran will have enjoyed a week’s rest after a tough day at the office in Round 7.

The value of experience can’t be understated against a seasoned side like Geelong.

The challenge: Despite an injury to Nathan Grima, North’s back six held up well against Brisbane, albeit with little pressure.

Scott McMahon held up his end of the bargain as a late inclusion, and it’s hard to see the Kangaroos adding another tall into the mix with Joel Tippett and Scott Thompson already holding down key posts.

#32 Mason Wood

The reason: On top of the VFL goal-kickers list, Wood has been in fine form in recent weeks.

He booted four goals again on the weekend, and looks to be ready for a crack at AFL level.

The challenge: While North’s tall forwards have been somewhat inconsistent, the trio of Aaron Black, Drew Petrie and Majak Daw worked well last week, despite some inaccuracy in front of goal.

Making a debut against one of the league’s best, most experienced teams would be a tough ask for any youngster.

#41 Aaron Mullett

The reason: The talented defender has been a regular in the Kangaroos’ lineup over the past two seasons, missing last week due to hamstring soreness.

His precision kicking could prove vital launching into attack on the longer ground at Geelong.

The challenge: Taking risks with injured players can prove a team’s downfall against better teams, so North will need to ensure he is 100 per cent fit before naming him to play.
