Petrie: Scott ‘a teacher’
When North Melbourne faces Richmond on Sunday, it will be Brad Scott’s 100th match as coach.
When North Melbourne faces Richmond on Sunday, it will be Brad Scott’s 100th match as senior coach.
Speaking on the AFL Exchange podcast, vice-captain Drew Petrie chatted about the influence Scott has had since joining the club in 2009.
“When Brad first came to North Melbourne he was definitely a teacher,” he said.
“It was about building relationships and implementing a game-plan. When he started coaching he probably thought it would take two or three years for us to nail (the game plan), but as things evolve it’s probably taken three or four years.”
While North’s recruiting department has unearthed some quality best 22 players, Scott’s awareness of emerging talent has also been important.
“Brad’s knowledge of all the current TAC Cup players is just outstanding,” Petrie added.
“You can ask him about almost any of the top 100 TAC Cup players or the 100 top youngsters and he’ll know their position and a little bit about their personality as well.
“Not only is he the coach, but Brad has a real big knowledge of everyone in the industry. When he first came in he knew he was the front man of the footy club and the spokesman, so he really embraced doing everything.”
Under Scott, North has implemented a number of new methods to the football department, an achievement not lost on Petrie.
“Brad’s probably brought the 21st century to the North Melbourne Footy Club. He loves his technology and modern training techniques and styles.
“It’s summed up by us going to Utah for the last four years to do our high-altitude training camp. Brad’s a really strong believer in the high-altitude training.”
