AFL Fantasy is back for another season, and the team at Footy Prophet will again be supplying NMFC.com.au with premium fantasy analysis and tips for the 2015 season.
The AFL Finals are here and AFL Fantasy Match Day is running all series long. There’s some talent to be found amongst North Melbourne as it takes on Richmond and there are plenty of reasons why coaches should consider Kangaroos for their line-ups.
In AFL Fantasy Match Day, coaches pick a team of two midfielders, two defenders, two forwards and a ruckman. It’s hard to see anyone passing up the opportunity of selecting All-Australian squad member Todd Goldstein.
Having played all but one game in 2015, Goldstein has showed scintillating form, setting a new record for hit-outs in Round 12 and also averaging nearly 15 disposals and 45 hit-outs for the year. He had the second highest fantasy average in the AFL, right behind fellow ruck Stefan Martin.
With strong finals experience under his belt, including a monster 15-disposal, 54 hit-out game in North’s semi-final win against Geelong, Goldstein is primed for an excellent score. Even the redoubtable Ivan Maric will be hard pressed to contain the Roo, especially after a week’s break. Back him in for a big game.
Brent Harvey knows a thing or two about finals and knows how to perform on the big stage. Such is Harvey’s reputation that he saw some close checking from opposition players in last year’s finals, but he still managed to net an average of 22 disposals and a goal a game.
North is applying Harvey’s talent around the goals late this year, which has allowed Boomer to kick 13 goals from seven games. He is a serious threat and one player who could rise to the occasion and post a big score.
Finally, one smoky option is big Drew Petrie. In Round 6, Petrie topped 110 points, despite only kicking a single goal. His strong marking and hard work around the ground set the tone for North’s 35-point win and there’s every chance the vice-captain could go large again.
Petrie’s Round 23 score of 56 points should be considered a one-off, as before then he hadn’t scored lower than 80 points against the Tigers since 2009. With talls Jarred Waite and Ben Brown in support and nearly a full-strength North side to deliver the ball, Petrie is going to be a tough forward to stop.
Around the Grounds
With limited choices in AFL Fantasy Match Day, you need to choose carefully. Thankfully, there are some clear choices to be made in all games.
With the Eagles announcing they won’t tag Sam Mitchell, fantasy coaches would be wise to snap up the pint-sized veteran. He scored 117 points against the Eagles in Round 18, has topped 100 on 13 occasions in 2015, and his lowest score was 68 points against a hard Port Adelaide tag in Round 4.
Hawthorn is gunning for a three-peat and Sam Mitchell has a wealth of finals experience. With no Eagle tag forthcoming, he’s going to run riot.
Patrick Dangerfield is a prime fantasy pick for the Crows. His late-season from was sluggish, but early on he was electric. He scored 110 points against the Western Bulldogs in Round 4 and he’s scored three tons out of his last four games against the Dogs. Rory Sloane is a less-risky pick, as he is in brilliant form and Dangerfield will likely take most of the opposition heat.
The Swans have players out all over the shop, and need a big one from Ben McGlynn, who hasn’t played a senior game since Round 18. He would be a risky selection, but he has seen time in the NEAFL and Sydney would not pick an unfit player. McGlynn’s record against Fremantle is a little patchy, but he did score 153 points against them in Round 5.
