Better with age
At age 33, Brent Harvey is showing no signs of slowing down, but can he be a force again in 2012?
For 16 seasons he has run rings around his opponents and is considered North Melbourne’s most dominant player since Wayne Carey. At age 33, Brent Harvey is showing no signs of slowing down, but can he be a force again in 2012?
In the third quarter at Eureka Stadium on Sunday, Harvey proved he’s still got it. With 323 games under his belt he certainly looks every bit the player we’ve all come to know and love.
When he entered the game after half-time against the Bulldogs, just five points separated the sides. By the next change the margin was 27 thanks largely to his influence and remarkable 13 possessions.
While Matt Campbell, Kieran Harper and even Sam Wright in an uncharacteristic defensive role also contributed, none were as impressive as ‘Boomer’ with six kicks and seven handballs.
By the end of the match he was North’s second highest possession winner with 19 touches (nine kicks, 10 handballs) and racked up 53 Dream Team points, showing he hasn’t lost any of his customary zip or ball-winning ability.
Will the recently introduced substitute rule extend the careers of players like Harvey and just how long could the little champion continue playing?
