$1million club shrinks

The AFL millionaire's club decreased from eight to five in 2013, but there's been a surge in the pay brackets just below.

Gary Ablett, Tom Scully and Aaron Sandilands are believed to be in the illustrious club, with Chris Judd and Nick Riewoldt touted as potential players to round out the top five.

41 players earnt over $600,000 in 2013 compared to 26 the previous year.

The AFL's average salary last season was $265,179, up almost $15,000 year-on-year.

“We’d sack King”

Andrew Demetriou says Jake King’s association with bikie figure Toby Mitchell “defies belief” but Port Adelaide president David Koch, went one step further.

“We’d get rid of him, absolutely,” Koch said on Sunrise.

“Simple as that. Our leadership group would tear him to shreds and say either you stop doing this or you’re not part of our group anymore simple as that.”

Murphy to sign-on

Blues’ captain Marc Murphy is "pretty close" to re-signing despite becoming a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

"My manager and the club are pretty close to working out a deal, so not too far off now," Murphy told SEN radio.

"There are a few boys out of contract and we're all pretty keen to stay together and get it all sorted.”

A fresh start

Despite some regrets over the handling of a horror 2013 season for the AFL, Demetriou has told The Age’s Caroline Wilson 2014 is a clean slate.

''There is no doubt we have tested our supporters. I think 2013 was a very complex year and for a lot of people it was a very emotional year. I think it's time to start again.''

Williams convicted

Collingwood’s Marley Williams has been convicted of grievous bodily harm for breaking a man's jaw in a brutal one-punch attack outside a nightclub.

The jury at Albany District Court delivered the verdict following more than two-and-a-half hours of deliberations.

The 20-year-old was charged over the attack on 29-year-old Matthew Robertson during the Christmas holidays in 2012.
