In Friday night’s NAB Cup opener against the Tigers, North Melbourne won by three points after Robbie Tarrant goaled with less than two minutes on the clock. But just how did the ball end up in his hands?

The play
There’s a throw-in 60 metres from Richmond’s goal. Late in the game, both sides are playing with a man behind the ball.

Out of the stoppage, Kieran Harper finds the ball at the back of the pack but his team is unable to clear. The youngster dives in with a second effort. Enter Jamie Macmillan.
With the ball waiting to be won, Macmillan swoops. Showing confidence beyond his years, he bursts out of the pack and takes a bounce.

Now with the ball on the wing, Macmillan dishes a handball to Matt Campbell.

As Campbell streams through the middle, Drew Petrie looms as an ominous target.

Petrie leads diagonally and creates a big gap between he and opponent Dylan Grimes, but Campbell holds onto the ball and chooses another option.

The vice-captain's move leaves room for Robbie Tarrant to double back on his opponent and he’s duly rewarded as Campbell kicks into the space.
Tarrant is calm, not to be deterred by the significance of the kick. He takes a deep breath, kicks through the ball and gets the desired result. North Melbourne win.
