Robbie Tarrant and Mason Wood have put their hands up for a call-up to the North Melbourne side after strong performances for Werribee on Sunday.

The pair lined up in the Tigers’ practice match against an AFL Academy team, featuring the best youngsters from around the country.

While Tarrant didn’t have much to do defensively in an 82-point win, he managed to make an impact going the other way.

“As the game went on he (Tarrant) really tested out the opposition offensively. He was winning the ball and linking and getting on the end of a few balls coming out,” Development Manager Ben Dyer told NMFC.com.au.

“He kicked it really well and made some really good decisions.

“After half-time he was pretty close to the best player out there, which says a lot given they didn’t see a whole lot of ball down that end of the ground. He did everything you could ask for in that scenario.”

Labelled “terribly unlucky to miss” North’s season-opener by coach Brad Scott, Mason Wood continued his impressive form in the forward half.

“He really played to his strengths. He hit up up the field and then turned around and hit up again,” Dyer said.

“His GPS numbers should be really high. The opposition just couldn’t go with him.

“Defensively he was pretty strong as well. A couple of times they marched the ball out and he’d just get an arm in and tackle, or steal the ball and create opportunities for the other players with his pressure.

“It wasn’t normal opposition, but you can only do what you can in those scenarios, and he was pretty dominant.”

Daniel Currie made a strong start in the ruck.

“He had a real height and weight advantage, so he was able to pretty much put the ball wherever he wanted,” Dyer said.

“He was really dominant at the centre bounce and stoppages at the ground.”

But Currie's day came to a premature end, forced off the ground in the second term after a clash of heads.

In his absence Majak Daw was forced to shoulder the load for almost the entire second half.

“He (Daw) just jumped over their number one ruckman,” Dyer said.

“His follow-up and contesting was really strong with a couple of really good tackles and tracking of the ball after the centre bounces.

“Maj pretty much had to ruck unchanged the last quarter and a bit, so it was a really good hitout for him playing that many minutes.”

Kieran Harper relished another opportunity through the midfield, continuing his solid pre-season.

“It’s about getting him around the ball and getting him to hunt the footy and pressure and tackle.

“For the third game in a row he looked really sharp with his lateral movement and looked like he was up and about.”
