There were two late changes before North Melbourne won its semi-final, meaning the likelihood of the same 22 facing West Coast could be slim.

The two Robbie’s – Tarrant and Nahas – made way for Luke McDonald and Kayne Turner.

The inclusions performed well, McDonald solid in defence and Turner holding Rhyce Shaw to just 11 disposals.

Defenders

If Tarrant is fit, he will most likely come straight back into the line-up. With West Coast’s array of tall forwards all in good form, North’s key defenders will need to be on their game from siren to siren.

In the Eagles’ qualifying final victory, they played Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and one of Nic Naitanui or Callum Sinclair forward. depending on who was rucking at the time.

That means there’s an extra addition to the forward line who wasn’t present when North defeated West Coast back in Round 10. Darling played his first game of the year the following week after recovering from injury.

Forwards

The defensive forward role has become crucial for North in its two finals victories.

It was Nahas who played the role against Richmond, negating Bachar Houli. Against Sydney it was his replacement Kayne Turner, who shut down Shaw.

Depending on the potential matchups for North’s small forwards, a further change could be in order for the preliminary final.

The wildcard is the bigger body of Shannon Hurn. The Eagles’ skipper has a considerable weight advantage compared to Houli and Shaw, potentially making it tougher to choose the adequate match-up.

Midfielders

The debate over the fitness of Daniel Wells continues for another week. The 30-year-old has been doing everything possible to be passed fit to play his first game since Round 2.

However, the performance of the midfield against Sydney was excellent, well-balanced between both the inside and the outside work. It makes a change in that area hard to predict.
