A six day break following an interstate trip is the scenario for North Melbourne leading into its Friday night clash against Carlton.
In addition there were a few sore players at the conclusion of the victory over St Kilda, meaning there is the potential for changes to be made
Have your say on any potential changes in the comments below.
#4: Liam Anthony
The reason: Anthony responded to his omission from the senior side with another quality VFL outing, collecting 35 disposals in North Ballarat’s victory on Sunday. Impressively, he mixed in a lot of contested possessions and tackling with his usual outside run.
The challenge: North Ballarat’s game took place on Sunday afternoon, meaning Anthony would only have a five day break if picked to face Carlton. While it may leave him as a substitute candidate, there could be worries over whether he could run out a full game on the fast Etihad surface after such a short break.
#7: Jack Ziebell
The reason: With another week to heal from his knee injury sustained against Brisbane, Ziebell should be approaching full fitness.
The challenge: If the vice-captain is unable to complete a full session, caution will most likely be the preferred method for another week.
#14: Trent Dumont
The reason: Dumont was important for North Ballarat in key moments on Sunday, picking up valuable last quarter possessions to steer his side to an important victory.
The challenge: After Dumont’s outing for the Roosters, development coach Ben Dyer discussed how the first-year player was entering a block of increased training in an attempt to fast-track his outside game.
Combine that with a five-day break and it is hardly an ideal recipe for a senior debut, perhaps not allowing him the best possible chance to impress on the big stage.
#21: Luke McDonald
The reason: Making his first appearance in this weekly feature, McDonald was a late withdrawal due to illness on game day against the Saints. Barring any out of the ordinary mishap, he will most likely return to the side for Friday’s game.
The challenge: With a week off following Round 18, there is a chance of giving McDonald an extended break. First year players running out of legs in the closing stages of a season is a common occurrence, and a timely rest could avoid a similar situation with the Rising Star nominee.
#26: Taylor Hine
The reason: Hine was again one of Werribee’s best despite a loss to Collingwood. While he was forced to deal with a deluge of inside 50’s, the number 26 held up well and earned praise from Gavin Brown for his efforts.
The challenge: In recent weeks North has held opposition small forwards in check relatively well, thanks in large part to the renaissance of Sam Wright. Despite Carlton possessing a number of dangerous smalls, the coaching staff may have faith in Wright, Shaun Atley and co to do the job.
#38: Majak Daw
The reason: Daw’s defensive pressure was a standout in a tough day for Werribee on Saturday. He laid eight tackles in a pleasing sign of his development.
The challenge: The trio of Drew Petrie, Aaron Black and Ben Brown are working well in tandem, making it a tough side to crack for Daw at this stage.
#44: Max Warren
The reason: Warren was arguably the best on ground in North Ballarat’s victory, shutting Jeff Garlett out of the game while also being influential himself.
The challenge: Similar to Anthony, Warren would also be coming off a five day break if selected. His attributes would also be suited to a full game, making it a challenge for his recovery.
