Families from across Australia converged on Arden St last week, as the club welcomed the new recruits’ nearest and dearest.
As part of their induction to life as a Kangaroo, the families of Jed Anderson, Ryan Clarke, Mitch Hibberd, Ben McKay, Declan Mountford, Farren Ray and Corey Wagner got their own guided tour of the club’s facilities as well as a special welcome presentation.
Director of Football Geoff Walsh said the club’s induction program gave families a chance to see what life was like as a professional footballer and meet staff at the club who would be working extensively with the players day-in, day-out.
“While some of those that joined us were from Melbourne, there were plenty from interstate who wouldn’t be very familiar with the city, let alone the inner workings of our footy club, so this was a great opportunity to welcome those families into the fold,” Walsh said.
“For the families of those just drafted, we aim to give them some insights into what their son, dad, brother or husband can expect now they are AFL players, while also highlighting the networks that are available to them.
“And even for those who are familiar with the AFL, every club is different so we were more than happy to give them some insights into North Melbourne.”
Families came from as far as Darwin (Anderson) and regional Western Australia (Mountford) to be part of the induction process.
There was plenty of support from the more experienced North family, with captain Andrew Swallow leading a group of current players who also attended on the night.
The support also extended well beyond the playing group, with families of the Kangaroos' players joining the formalities and sharing their experiences and advice.
“Having the more seasoned parents with us gave everyone a chance to share and learn more about the role parents play once they are drafted to or arrive at our club,” Walsh added.
The families also returned to Arden St on Saturday and were able to soak in all the action from North’s intra-club match, where many of the new recruits stood out on the field.
