Young forward Kayne Turner has recovered from the hamstring injury that has interrupted his past fortnight, North coach Brad Scott says.

The 20-year-old, who was a late withdrawal against the Brisbane Lions in round two due to the hamstring complaint, lined up in Werribee's season opener against Essendon at Windy Hill last Saturday.

Scott said Turner had trained strongly this week and was in contention to take on Fremantle at Etihad Stadium this Sunday after being named in the 25-man squad.

"When you look at continuity, we just erred on the side of caution last week with him, but now he played well again (for Werribee)," Scott told NMFC.com.au on Thursday night.

"The last few games he's played, he really deserves to play senior footy but it's just been the continuity of the hamstring … and now he's available."

Mason Wood's eye-catching display for Werribee last week did not go unnoticed, with the 22-year-old another option to replace the injured Taylor Garner, who suffered a hamstring injury last round.

Scott said Wood's VFL form against the Bombers – in which he accumulated 36 disposals and snagged three goals – had warranted a senior call-up.

"He's got some terrific qualities but he's been interrupted with various niggling injuries over the last few years, so he hasn't been able to get that continuity of training and playing, but he has this pre-season," he said.

"His performance last week was very, very good at VFL level so he just gets picked on form."

Defender Lachie Hansen, who made way for fellow backman Scott Thompson in the win over Melbourne last Sunday, was also a chance to return after being named in the extended squad to take on the Dockers.

"The back group have been going really well, individually and collectively, and it's just a matter of Lachie's the next defender in (but) he just can't get his spot at the moment," Scott said.

The Roos' coach said newly promoted rookie Farren Ray would benefit the side courtesy of his experience and ability to perform multiple roles, including in the middle and across half-back.

"He's a 205-game veteran who has played in Grand Finals and is in really good form in the VFL," Scott said.

"We feel (he) can play a variety of roles but really stiffen us up in certain areas as well, and he gives us great midfield run."
