Follow North Melbourne on Twitter

Hashtags are everywhere on across social media these days. The question for many is just which one to use to stay involved in the conversation.

For North fans, the hashtag #NMFC will be used on non-match days from the club’s account - @northkangaroos. Taking up just five characters, #NMFC allows more information to be passed along in a single tweet.

The benefit of a hashtag is it allows users to follow the conversation without clogging up their personal news feed and also filter conversations by team. For example, in following the hashtag #NMFC, users won’t see news from an interstate side.

Here’s an example of the hashtag being used:

In addition to #NMFC, there are also a couple of other hashtags used: #NorthStats: This is used during the week to pass on any interesting stats and facts. An example from earlier in 2013:

#risetogether: The slogan for the 2014 membership campaign:

However #NMFC will be the hashtag used for the majority of tweets, so join in the conversation by tagging your next tweet and engaging with the club and like-minded fans.

Match-days On a match-day, there is only one hashtag used, as set by the @AFL. It always follows this structure:

#afl(hometeam)(awayteam)
Each side has its own nickname, so the following is mixed and matched depending on the weekly fixtures.

Adelaide: #crows
Brisbane: #lions
Carlton: #blues
Collingwood: #pies
Essendon: #bombers
Fremantle: #freo
Geelong: #cats
Gold Coast #suns
Greater Western Sydney: #giants
Hawthorn: #hawks
Melbourne: #dees
North Melbourne: #north
Port Adelaide: #power
Richmond: #tigers
Sydney: #swans
St Kilda: #saints
West Coast: #eagles
Western Bulldogs: #dogs

So if North was at home to Essendon, the match-day hashtag would be #aflnorthbombers.
