North Melbourne got more than just the four points from its win over Hawthorn on Sunday.
The Roos held-off a fast-finishing Hawks’ outfit at Etihad Stadium to claim a 28-point win, and captain Jack Ziebell believes the victory will have a huge impact on a developing group.
“That was great,” Ziebell told North Media.
“It was awesome to see the boys challenged in the third quarter with a couple of men down, but to be able to come back and get the job done was awesome to see.
“It was character building, and it’s going to build a lot of belief in us moving forward.”
Following North’s Round 3 loss to Melbourne, Brad Scott was critical of some of the younger players who failed to complement the veterans in the side.
However in the past two weeks, those younger stars have stood tall.
Ryan Clarke had his best game of the season with 26 disposals and ten marks, while Trent Dumont wasn’t too far behind with 23 touches of his own.
“This week, as well as last week, we’ve had contributors everywhere,” Ziebell said.
“A lot of young guys are standing up which is awesome to see and they’re taking on a whole lot more responsibility.”
“Every line had winners today, and if we get that contribution from everyone each week, we’re going to be a hard team to play against.”
Sunday’s match was the beginning of a tough stretch of matches, with Port Adelaide, Sydney, Richmond and GWS ahead over the next three weeks.
The captain believes that this win will provide a huge boost to the competition's second youngest squad, and make it a tough opponent to face this month.
“This win will really help the confidence of the group,” he said.
“Every month in AFL footy is tough, there’s no easy games now.
“You look at the results around the league and it’s very, very tight, but we’ll take it one week at a time.
“We’ve got Port Adelaide next week which will be a massive game at Etihad, and we’ll look to jump on the front foot again and get off to a good start.”
