When Brittany Gibson walked into the North Melbourne change rooms, the expression on her face said it all.
“I’m a die-hard North Melbourne fan,” Gibson revealed to North Media.
“Right now, I’m in the changerooms in the MCG as the North AFL boys get ready to face Collingwood … it’s exciting.”
A lifelong North fan, Gibson is still coming to grips with calling herself a Kangaroo having been recently recruited for the club's AFLW side.
“The boys have all come up and shook my hand and welcomed me to the club,” she said.
“My partner and I are expecting a newborn child in about seven weeks, and Benny Brown and I were chatting earlier about how his little one and my little one can play together and stuff … it’s those little conversations that make you feel really supported.”
Tasmanian-born, Gibson also places a great deal of emphasis on the connection the club has with the southernmost state.
“The fact that North Melbourne has a strong connection with Tasmania is amazing,” she said.
“To actually get to go back to my home state and play in front of family and friends … I’m really excited.”
From Auskick, to local footy, then the TSLW and now AFLW, Gibson is one of the only women at the highest level to have completed a full footy pathway.
“After playing in Devonport in the mini-league, I went up through the ranks for the Cats and played a bit in high school,” Gibson explained.
“But then obviously, I couldn’t keep playing because I was female.”
Refusing to give in on her dream to play footy, Gibson kept ‘bulldozing’ through and created her own opportunities.
“We started a female league,” Gibson recalled.
From there, Gibson played for the Burnie Dockers for a couple years and was finally rewarded with the ultimate success in being drafted to the Brisbane’s AFLW team.
A Lion for two years, Gibson ended her time up North with a smile.
“Now I’m here at North Melbourne and loving it,” she said.
