#1: Daniel Currie
The reason: A late change before North’s victory against the Swans on Sunday, Currie had provided valuable ruck relief to Todd Goldstein in the previous two games while fitting into the forward structure.
The challenge: Currie’s replacement, Robbie Nahas, was super impressive in his first game for the club. The match committee may opt to keep only the two genuine key forwards which would keep the former Swan on the sidelines for another week.
#4: Liam Anthony
The reason: Anthony had 22 possessions in only 50 per cent game time for North Ballarat on Saturday. Add his disposal count to an impressive nine tackles laid and Anthony is clearly in impressive form.
The challenge: North’s midfield, as a collective, is firing on all cylinders. It’s extremely tough to see a way in for Anthony at this current stage.
#7: Jack Ziebell
The reason: The vice-captain is as hard-at-it as any player and his body work around the contest would be a major boost.
The challenge: Much like last week, Ziebell’s shoulder is the only thing keeping him from returning from the side. He was deemed a 50-50 chance to face Collingwood by Brad Scott on Wednesday at Arden Street.
#19: Sam Wright
The reason: Wright returned to form for Werribee on the weekend, notching 31 possessions in a heavy victory over Bendigo in the VFL.
The challenge: Wright will most likely have to string together multiple solid performances to break in.
#26: Taylor Hine
The reason: As a small defender, Hine is not only shutting his opponent down but also adding improved disposal into his game. The former Sun is in good form in the VFL.
The challenge: In a similar tale to most of the players currently plying their trade with one of North’s VFL affiliates, Hine has only defenders in good form ahead of him.
#32: Mason Wood
The reason: Wood’s disposal last weekend was greatly improved. In addition to regularly hitting the scoreboard, it was a quality outing for the left footer.
The challenge: Wood spent some time on the wing on the weekend for Werribee. In a slightly new role, the match committee may opt to let the left-footer develop that extra string to his bow before considering him for senior selection.
#38: Majak Daw
The reason: Daw is providing a strong target playing forward in the VFL while also competing well in the ruck. The dual role is very similar to the one he would be called upon to perform if a recall to the senior side arrives.
The challenge: Dan Currie looks to be ahead of Daw in the battle for a spot and he is currently fit, meaning Daw will most likely have to bide his time playing for Werribee.
#42: Scott McMahon
The reason: Collingwood’s array of midfielders which can push forward provide a matchup conundrum for bigger defenders. In McMahon there is a medium defender who can play against the majority of midfielders.
The challenge: Michael Firrito’s return to the senior side was a success and McMahon is still likely to be behind the veteran in the pecking order.
